Its true that united Pakistan was rapidly Industrializing in 1960's. I don't know about BD but West Pakistan is just lagging behind everyone since then.

In 1983, per capital income of Pakistan was higher than China but those days have long passed. Currently foreign reserves of Bangladesh are around $50 billion vs Pakistan at $8 billion.

You guys must be making less financial mistakes as compared to us.

Yes I can say @bluesky bhai you are right. Some time in the early to mid nineties. Sialkot and Gujranwala areas started to diversify into making parts for automobiles, trucks, motorcycles and tractors. Later this spread to making bespoke parts for construction equipment like Excavators, cranes, wheel loaders, bulldozers, road rollers and all sorts of other heavy construction equipment, which are extremely expensive to source from overseas.

Pakistani roadside shops have been very resourceful in sourcing the raw materials of these parts from ship-breaking ship plate and have gone into making their own fabrication equipment like heavy duty lathes, shapers, planers etc. I'd say right now Pakistan is at least ten to fifteen years ahead of Bangladesh in being self sufficient in making these types of spares and parts, some as large as forty to fifty tons in weight. Examples are crankshaft assemblies of large ammonia compressors.

We in Bangladesh have not done this - nothing of this sort of inventive effort exists here. Massive afsoos.....

One of the primary reason is that there are RAW agent commerce ministers in Hasina's cabinet who have made sure that Bangladesh remains an open market with no tariff imposed on Indian machinery imports (in fact all Indian imports - regardless of type).

All Bangladesh does is import Indian machinery and keep their machinery fabricators alive. when it should be the reverse, owing to how low cost the labor in Bangladesh is....

When these policies exist, Bangladesh will never become independent in Light Engineering field (or even Heavy Engineering) and can never become a profitable exporters. This is clearly RAW saajish to ensure Bangladesh never becomes a booming economy in some specific fields. like Light Engineering.

Purchase of lathe machines, shapers, planers and milling machines is one common indicator of industrialization. Bangladesh is far, far behind Pakistan in that regard.

Light and Heavy Engg. is one of the crucial fields that China and Taiwan used for export diversification, along with exporting apparel and shoes. Bangladesh and Pakistan should not be any different.

This kind of manufacturing in Pakistan will ultimately lead the small industrialists to acquire technologies and know-how and accumulation of money capital.

Many of them will expand their production base by building modern manufacturing factories if Banks are there to provide them with soft loans.

Industrialization is a continuous and ongoing process. Pakistan is on track already.

BD is nowhere near Pakistan. The GoB has systematically discouraged private industries from growing up which resulted in all kinds of imports by dollars that our women garment workers earn with a pittance of a salary.

I am pessimistic about the future prospect as well because the govt has systematically wasted the FE. Now, BD has only $26 billion in reserves that can meet 3 months' import of the necessities.

So, the govt cannot allow importing of finished mechanical goods in large quantities. But, Pakistan will not suffer because its SME can produce many mechanical goods internally.

In my opinion, Pakistan has a better prospect of becoming industrialized than BD.

Here is a 40 ton Ammonia Compressor crankshaft being manufactured from dhalai loha (cast steel) in a no-name workshop in Pakistan, they not only forged this heavy part but machined it to tolerance.

Here is a massive cog gear being cast in situ in Pakistan as well (probably for a sugar mill I'm guessing) and will be machined to tolerance by a shaper locally (the shaper machines are probably refurbished and are quite old, but they work just fine I reckon),

Will you see Hasina govt. provide bank loans for setting something like these in Bangladesh?
