A Karachi-based company introduced its own range of electric vehicles on Friday.

Crown Group has been making auto parts since 1963. It displayed a number of environmentally friendly vehicles, including motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, cars and ambulances, which it says are energy efficient.

The starting price for an electric car, a pilot project, is Rs400,000. It’s a two-door hatchback with a seating capacity of two persons. The prices of the rickshaws and motorcycles are between Rs200,000 and Rs55,000 respectively.

The company says its vehicles will cost Rs1.25 for each kilometre travelled, which “makes it the cheapest” option available for transport.

Farhan Hanif, the chairperson of the group, says the two and three wheeler automobiles can travel 60km to 70km on a full charge. A car fully charged on a 50-amp battery can travel up to 50kms.

Eight Chinese companies have partnered with the Crown Group in joint ventures, said Hanif, adding that the company is ready to expand production as soon as the government implements its electric vehicle policy.

If the government keeps its word on the electric vehicle policy, the custom duty on imports of auto-parts will only be 1% while the sales tax will not exceed 5%, said the chairperson.

He emphasised that the advent of electric vehicles will help boost Pakistan’s economy and introduce new jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities as specific power stations to charge the vehicles will have to be established.

Crown Group is a new player in the electric vehicles market and has invested Rs2 billion to set up its manufacturing plant.

I see one mega issue and that is flooding! how will it cope in the rainy and flood seasons?

I'm interested in this garbage picking rickshaw.... That seems like a very innovative and interesting concept.


Government could start a pilot project of leasing these rickshaws to unemployed youth and paying them for the garbage they collect at the end of the day. This will be very profitable in Karachi with the amount of garbage there is to collect.

This could change the game in my smaller towns for a lot of people making commuting inside the city cheaper

The problem with battery-powered electric vehicles is the time it takes to charge the battery. Google gives this answer :

Its a Chinese Imported LSEV(Low Speed Electric Vehicle). For Range they have to switch to Lithium ion battery. This Vehicle is most probably using Lead Acid Battery.
To give you a simple Example Sazgar EV Lithium battery Rickshaw(3-wheelers) will Cost minimum 4 lac +.

charging has always been the headache.

My entire home and farm; we are off the grid; around 4-10kw generation between a solar and wind combination. I use 10x28v commercial truck batteries pile to run the inverters.

Think I read a news report where a Korean company has approached the government to build a swappable battery service as a pilot project. What will happen is that rickshaw drivers when they see their battery levels getting low they will go to one of the service stations and swap out the battery for another fully charged one for a fees. Just like going to a gas station to get fuel.

Seems like an innovative idea, hope it takes off.
