ROBOTS could be part of religious rituals and help humans to bury and mourn the dead in the future, it has been predicted.

Huge progress has been made in the field of Artificial Intelligence over the past few years, including self-driving cars and talking humanoid Sophia.

And the technology is so advanced that so-called “religions” centred around AI have even been started, such as one started by former Google and Uber engineer Anthony Levandowski.

The Way of the Future is a movement based around the worship of a “Godhead” robot that is said to be a billion times smarter than humans.

It is thought that as AI becomes more advanced and integrated into people’s lives, robots will increasingly be part of aspects of faith and religion.

Peter van der Putten, the director of AI Solutions at Pegasystems, said there are “many signs that hint a more symbiotic relationship between robots and religion in future’.

He told Daily Star Online: “You might think religion and AI are incompatible, and indeed to some degree, AI is competing with the central role of the human in the universe, at least in the Abrahamic religions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

“But there are also many signs that hint a more symbiotic relationship between robots and religion in future. Some religions have less issue with assigning agency to inanimate objects.”

Mr van der Putten, who is also an assistant professor at Leiden University, the Netherlands, explained automatons could also assist people in intimate religious ceremonies, such as funerals.

“Apocalyptic thinking actually bears a striking resemblance to singularity predictions, and robots may assist us with religious rituals such as burying and mourning the dead,” he explained.

“Actually, there are many examples of robots dating from medieval times or earlier that were made for religious purposes, such as a mechanical monk robot, made for Philip the Second in 1562.”

His prediction has been echoed by other experts in the industry.

David Niki, an AI and robotics expert, described a future where it is “likely” a number of these types of religions will exist, but said it is unlikely they will ever be widespread beliefs.

He explained: “I don't think they will ever go beyond small cults.

“These beliefs must solve something or offer something for the believers at a mass scale to actually gain adoption. Just because something is bigger and stronger will not make you worship it.

“Even if that would be the case, not everyone would submit to its authority – some would even fight back”.

And so it begins ... The era of the one eyed liar !

I see Robot companion a constant advisors to human

Africa I see becoming extinct
