RO asks Hina Rabbani Khar to produce marriage certificate
By Siddique Kaifee | DAWN.COM | 2 hours ago
MUZAFFARGARH: The Returning Officer on Saturday asked former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar to produce her marriage certificate during the scrutiny of her nomination papers in Kot Addu for the NA-177 seat.

Returning Officer Abdur Rehman Bodla asked Khar to produce her ‘nikahnama’ while examining her nomination papers in which the former minister had declared that her husband Feroz Gulzar had liabilities of Rs 35 million.

Khar has agreed to provide the said document. However, bizarre questioning by ROs during the scrutiny of nomination papers throughout the country has come under severe criticism.

Khar is contesting for a National Assembly seat in Kot Addu on a Pakistan Peoples Party ticket. On Saturday, she appeared before the RO for a hearing regarding objections on her nomination. After a brief hearing, the RO reserved his decision which will be announced on Sunday, the last date of nomination papers’ scrutiny.

This follows the Election Commission of Pakistan’s directive to the ROs to refrain from ‘irrelevant’ quizzing of candidates.

The nature of questions being asked by returning officers has attracted severe criticism from media, rights activists and political parties.

didnt ROs were advised not to do character assassination... this male chauvinism is unacceptable behaviour !!!

how is it related to election nomination??ecp is exploiting the situation in pakistan.

The lady should ask the Official for his birth cert to establish the fact that he is born in the 1st place !

somebody should ask RAHMAM MALIK for psychiatrists certificate that he is mentally stable given the non sense comments he make every time

What the heck has marriage certificate got to do with elections?

This is across the line by ECP and RO's.

What the heck is this??? These kind of questions are absurd, RO is lucky for not facing suite sexual harassment and discrimination

The ECP is trying to provide guidance to the Returning Officers to avoid such irrelevant questioning:

ISLAMABAD: In a belated attempt to ward off criticism on the Returning Officers’ controversial questioning of candidates during scrutiny of nomination papers, the Election Commission of Pakistan has directed the ROs to refrain from ‘irrelevant’ quizzing of the nominees, ECP’s Director General Sher Afgan told reporters in Islamabad.

The nature of questions being asked by returning officers has attracted severe criticism from media, rights activists and political parties. However, the methodology was being defended until Friday by ECP Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed who said Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution required the candidates to have ample knowledge of Islam.

Several candidates have had their nominations rejected on what are widely being viewed as flimsy grounds. Most prominent among those whose nominations were rejected is columnist Ayaz Amir. His nomination was rejected on the grounds that he wrote columns against the ideology of Pakistan and glorified the consumption of alcohol.

The scrutiny of nomination papers for the 2013 election candidates will continue until tomorrow.

Many believe that the latest ECP directive is a futile exercise as the scrutiny process will soon come to an end.

“Damage has already been done. The latest move is a damage control exercise to deflect criticism primarily arising out of Ayaz Amir’s case,” former Supreme Court Bar Association president and ex-member of ECP Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood told Dawn.com.

The former judge said the scrutiny process had also exposed the degree of competence of the returning officers working under the judiciary.

It has to do something!! Hina owns a textile mill and had borrowed a loan of 175 millions from Zarai Taraqiati Bank, she has not payed the loan back, when the EC asked her to submit the loan clearance certificate she told ECP that the mill is her husband's, so the ECP asked her to submit nikahnama to verify that the husband is her actual husband!

oh, I see, if this is the case than RO is right to question, these newspaper always publish half side of the story

this is what happens when clerks who only have a job of checking files deside destiny of Pakistan that just bullshit question

The Khar family has been involved in some of the most heinous crimes in the country... The fakhra younis case is before us all and so is the temper of Ghulam Mustafa Khar and Bilal Khar. Hina Rabbani is the neice of Ghulam Mustafa Khar who used to rape his wife. Tehmeena Durrani has written extensively about the brutality of the Khar family.

Paper nomination is becoming a joke. i dont agree with punshment given to fake degree holders either. EC isnt doing fair job

Hina Rabbani khar is contesting anymore, she withdraw's her nomination papers, her father is going to contest from the same seat.
