What's new

RIP Kentaro Miura

Well, your choice I guess.

I do admit my mistake that I miss out Frank Herbert's other Dune books, maybe I should check them out.

Please do. :)

I do think the TV series look a bit too low budget.

Yet there are some things in the TV series that look better than in the 1984 film, like the sandworm, the thopter aircraft, the hunter-seeker.

Also, the 1984 film has some silly things like Paul breaking open a rock floor just with his voice. :woot: That's not part of the book.

Dune is indeed SF, but it's so imbued with medieval social themes (Dukes, kings, emperor, Jihad) that you might find other fantasy works close to it.

I agree there are those themes and when I read the first three books years ago I was not a Communist with my own ideas of how political and economic system should be really like. But even now after I am a confirmed Communist I still remember the Dune books with fondness and like many of its themes and elements. A simple example would be the glowglobes which are lamps that don't require external electricity but use chemistry to create light. Maybe Frank Herbert was inspired about this from fireflies. Then there is the concept of "Fold space" which allows for very fast propulsion of spaceships to very far distances. Then there is the idea of the Reverend Mothers carrying memory of the lives of the Reverend Mothers before them. Many such things. And not only technological. Social too. For example when Paul has just been being examined by the house doctor Yueh, Paul's mother Jessica wants to hug her son but is intimidated by the presence of the doctor. This delicacy in social dealings. Other things too.

Yeah, I do admit Dune has some revolutionary ideas on tech that haven't been thought up before, the idea of "folding" space is indeed pretty mindblowing. The others are based medieval society and even mythological, like inheriting memory of others.
Still, if this is what you like, I'd recommend you reading manga especially fantasy and sci-fi ones since they try to do these medieval-modern-future synthesis too.

Berserk was one of a kind, I loved the anime of it. Guts was something else..

kentaros loss was a huge huge hit to all the fans and industry, may he rip.

Read the Dune sci-fi series by Frank Herbert. You will forget LOTR, GOT, the mangas, Star Wars and all that nonsense.
That's just weird to me because Dune is like the direct opposite to liberal wokeism.
I guess these people can appropriate everything, but Dune is closer to the Taliban beating Al Ghani just last month, but without the knife fight.

Just watched the Dune 2021 yesterday night, found it completely shit to be honest, also skimmed through fandom wiki.
A white saviour (Paul) saving less advanced savages (Fremen) and then conquering universe by claiming to be some Messiah (Lisan Al-Ghaib/Kwisatz Haderach). Also the savages are so stupid and fanatic that they continue their "Jihad" even after that thus massacring billions. Just bullshit after bullshit, written from an Eurocentric point of view. There is even a clear racist element when you see the upper class being played exclusively by white actors.
Also from a sci-fi point of view, it is stupid containing magical stuff and nothing close to real astronomical physics.

Berserk is far superior to the Dune bullshit. This is not even a comparison.

I know there are a few people here who are Fans of the Manga Berserk as I am one too. Sadly the creator or the Mangaka has passed away on 06/05/21.

His work is The GREATEST piece of fiction work I ever read. It touched me and many millions of other people.

RIP.

For those wondering what I am on about? Well go and read Berserk!
Berserk is one of the best example of hard world building, it's lore is comparable only to very few works in fiction. It is just a very unique genre or maybe one of its kind. Masterpiece.

Where did you watch the film because it's out of the cinemas ?

And Paul actually believes in himself as the Mahdi, or at least someone to precede the Mahdi, and believes in the mysticism of the Fremen. The Kwisatz Haderach is actually a lengthy genetic program of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood to create a superhuman and Paul arrives before the time the sisterhood expects. I must point to the dreams that Paul has. These dreams are prescience, he can look into the future and this is enhanced when he ingests or breathes Spice. I haven't watched the film but if the second part of the film comes out in 2023 as is said, it will cover the remainder of the first book in the series and you will see Paul's mother, Jessica, becoming the Reverend Mother of the Fremen after ingesting the Water of Life. The Fremen's previous Reverend Mother was a Fremen and she dies of age during the ceremony that Jessica becomes. Paul and Jessica become part of the religion of the Fremen. When I started reading the books many years ago I didn't feel Eurocentrism in them. The writer, Frank Herbert, included non-Christian and non-Western narratives. And you should look at how simple, sophisticated and empathetic the language of the books is. Please read the first book and then decide.

Now I will tell you why I didn't watch the film. When I watched the trailer last year IIRC it referred to a "Crusade" instead of a "Jihad" as in the books. Even the pre-stories speak of a Butlerian Jihad which was a war by humans against sentient machines and after this jihad humans made a law that forbade anyone from making machines which mimic the intelligence of humans. The second reason I didn't watch the film was because the Dune's imperial ecologist, Liet Kynes, in the film became a female which I thought was pandering to political correctness and spoilt the mood of the story.

However, I have watched YouTube vids about the technical well-done nature of the film ( sound and visual effects ) so I will watch it if it comes out next year or the year after.

@Bilal9, how do you feel about the above and what would you say to Naofumi ?

indeed that is the case. even some of the ardent book reviewers who think of it as some cartoon on paper change their minds after reading it.

thanks, not sure if i should recommend that you try to read Berserk or not

Believe it or not I’m a closet weeb myself. I’ve not read all the Berserk novels but I’ve read one or two and seen the anime 😊

I say give it a read as the anime doesn't do the work justice at all. but, be warned its subject matter is very very strong. not for the faint.

I’ve read a few Japanese novels - so I’ll give this a go for sure. At the movement I’m reading the Tale of Genji which is a classic Japanese novel.

as you are a military background person, I would Highly recommend. Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. Its a fantastic book about the way of a warrior. Musashi was a real person in history as well so its a sort of biography and fiction.

Liked the first one, second is noisy. But I will wait for Dune 2023 and then compare its sounds to your first one.

second one is about the birth of the main protagonist but there is still far better music by the maestro Susumu Hirasawa for Berserk

I have bookmarked your post and when Dune 2023 releases I will compare its sounds with your music. But how can one seriously compare the vastness and sophistication of the Dune universe with Berserk ?

clearly you cut yourself short by over fanboying for dune. read Berserk and then form an opinion or pov.

there are booktoobers who are anal for dune in being fans of it. but also come to love Berserk by Kentaro Miura as fans of fantasy genre.

in da mean time some more Berserk music by Susumu Hirasawa.
