What's new

RIP Kentaro Miura

Dune appeals to Liberals or those calling themselves progressive in western thinking.
That's kinda weird, no? Isn't it kind of a spoof of Lawrence of Arabia since it's about a white guy who joined a group of tribesmen and jihad against the reigning imperialist power?

today's western liberals bring up imperialism of the past. during the BLM marches in europe many symbols of colonialism were vandalised. which is an oxymoron. these people are direct beneficiaries of that colonial past.

do these liberals want to live in the 3rd world? No
He never finished the series it’s dragged for a long time same with one piece
dune?

That's just weird to me because Dune is like the direct opposite to liberal wokeism.
I guess these people can appropriate everything, but Dune is closer to the Taliban beating Al Ghani just last month, but without the knife fight.

I think it is incomplete because the sequels of Dune kinda go nowhere.

interesting.

interesting.
This is the last major battle in the Dune movie. Honestly, it's kinda prophetic. Just switch the freemen to the Taliban.
Then again, this itself is a reimagination of the arab tribesmen beating the Ottoman soldiers.

That's an interesting point, but can you explain why you think so?
I never read Dune, but I watch the adaptation, I find it iconic but not comparable to LOTR. It seems pretty incomplete.

About Star Wars, it's easy. Star Wars is a silly adaptation of the Dune universe.

LOTR I have watched the first film I think and I got the general sense that it seeks to dazzle the viewer with a grand graphics-heavy spectacle of a certain region of Earth. A certain version of Paradise set in the English past. There is no pan-human evolution in politics, religion, societal dynamics and technology. You should read the Dune books to get the vast scope and sophistication but written in simple yet detailed manner. A humanity and all the animal and planetary elements they encounter thousands of years from now, spread across space.

And which adaptation have you watched ? The 1984 film version or the year 2000 three-episode TV mini-series ? Both are actually adaptations of just the first book.

Dune appeals to Liberals or those calling themselves progressive in western thinking.

I am neither a "liberal" nor a progressive as promoted by Western governments. You may be interested to know that Dune has religious elements too - the Jewish sounding name Bene Gesserit belonging to the sisterhood, the Islamic-themed Mahdi expected by the Fremen people, the Fremen being ZenSunni Wanderers and Christian themes.

Read it.

Some on the internet do talk about Lawrence of Arabia being an inspiration but the book AFAIK doesn't say that the the Fremen people are Brown or White or Yellow. Their origin is said to be of the ZenSunni Wanderers which as the name says are a mix of Buddhists and Muslims. Many among them would be of White stock too.

Nah, LOTR is basically a synthesis of Nordic paganism, it's basically set the stage of northern european mythology, and it involves huge scope of different ages and socio-politics of each age.
Dune is far wider in scope, but it's more shallow because only the first book is written by Frank Herberts, the other kinda goes everywhere.

And I watch the 1984 movie of course, the most stylistic one.

And I don't think SW is an adaptation of Dune, it's in fact closer to space samurai movies.

why do you keep bringing up arabs, taliban etc?

. . .
couldnt that fit around your north vietnamese fighting south and its american allie?
It could as well, it fits any war where the lesser technological but more motivated troops defeat the empire's heavily armored/armed soldiers.
Still, Dune was published in 1965.

We kinda go off-topic here but I think @jamahir should read Berserk at least from Black Swordsman to Golden Age. A story of rise and fall of a man, and another man's fight against unlimited odds.

It's seriously one of the best manga.
People undersell manga as a medium but some are comparable or greater than great films and literature.

OK.

Hmm.

But you said you never read Dune. Actually the first six books were written by Frank Herbert and then years after he died his son and a co-writer took up the work by getting the ideas from Herbert Sr's notes.

And I watch the 1984 movie of course, the most stylistic one.

I have watched it but I found the 2000 TV miniseries to be better. The three-episode upload is missing on YotuTube but please do watch this upload of the first episode on another YT channel.

And I don't think SW is an adaptation of Dune, it's in fact closer to space samurai movies.

I haven't watched space samurai films but I still think that SW is a copy of Dune.

Well, for years I am hooked on science fiction. I have read quite a few books of Ben Bova for example. I don't think, from what I know of manga, I will ever put my mind to it. :)

Well, your choice I guess. I do admit my mistake that I miss out Frank Herbert's other Dune books, maybe I should check them out. I do think the TV series look a bit too low budget.
Dune is indeed SF, but it's so imbued with medieval social themes (Dukes, kings, emperor, Jihad) that you might find other fantasy works close to it.
