KARACHI: Around 200 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the suicide attack that killed Superintendent of Police (SP) Crime Investigation Department (CID) Chaudhry Aslam in Karachi, Express News reported on Friday.

The Inspector General Sindh had previously said that at least 20-25 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

A resolution was passed in the Senate for recognition of Aslam’s services.

The funeral prayer of Aslam and two of his officers was offered at Karachi Police Academy.

It was reported that strict security was tight all around the city, following a severe traffic jam near Korangi.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) member Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) members Abdul Qadir Patel and Najmi Patel and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah were in attendance at the funeral.

Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) member Saleem Zia, CPLC Chief and Core Commander Karachi also attended the funeral prayers.

Aslam will be buried at the Gizri graveyard, Phase IV.

Earlier today, it was reported that a pickup truck was used in the attack.

According to sources, parts of the truck and pieces of blue plastic cans were found at the crime scene. The explosive material was kept in blue cans on top of the pickup truck, the sources revealed.

The driver of a police mobile in Aslam’s squad confirmed that a pickup truck was used in the attack, the sources added.

On January 9, the suicide blast by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had killed arguably Pakistan’s best known police-commander, Aslam, near Essa Nagri at the Lyari Expressway.

Shortly after the attack, TTP spokesperson in Mohmand, Sajjad Mohmand, had told Express News that the group had carried out a “successful” attack to take revenge for several Taliban members killed by the police. The TTP had also carried out an attack on Aslam’s house in 2011.

Aslam, the famed and fearless police officer had 29 years of experience behind him, and ran an elaborate intelligence network across Karachi’s complex web of alliances and bitter, bloody rivalries. Over the years, he had amassed a fortune just from gathering bounties over the dozens of militants and wanted criminals in the country.

The bomber smashed his vehicle into Aslam’s convoy and he and two other policemen were killed, senior CID officer Iqbal Mehmood had stated.

The blast was so powerful that it threw the shattered wreckage of Aslam’s vehicle some 20 metres from where it was hit.

It is not a rumour, balkay it's a confirmed fact. Chaudary Aslam was a poster boy of PPP (Zardari) and reached out to him to made a settlement with MQM. That's why for past 9-10 years. His operations were against TTP and layari gangsters. Not a single raid conducted against MQM

Agreed .... but 'speculation' is the proper word to use in open internet forum .... ;)

I just found out that it was the order of Ex Rat CJP , Iftikhar .. upon which the security detail & Bullet proof car of Ch Aslam was taken back .

I just found out that it was the order of Ex Rat CJP , Iftikhar .. upon which the security detail & Bullet proof car of Ch Aslam was taken back .

the barricades which the common citizens install due to security situation in MQM areas was termed as no go areas and ordered the romoval of those barricades

in real life they can't even clear the no go areas

the crux of the matter is the imported judiciary or police/rangers doesn't even know the basic knowledge about the city

Whats been said is that the vehicle was taken back for repairs which were not required and a secondary car was provided. The provided car did not have a explosive detecting device installed in the first one which would raise an alarm when explosives are in a 50m range. Now these are just things that people in knowledgeable circles have said but I wouldn't bank on it. I would classify them as rumors. Is there such a detection device for explosives??

Aslam joined the force in 1987. He became the inspector and station house officer for the Kalakot police station in 1991 and then SHO for Gulbahar in 1994.

He was one of the few officers left alive among those who participated in the infamous clean-up operation against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in the 1990s.

. . . .

What the fck is this supposed to mean?

From where does the Army chief come into this whole scenario?

What has the Army chief got to do with issues in Sindh police?

And to set the record straight, the car he usually had was out of order and had been sent for repair (it wasn't taken away). This was also a bullet proof car.

And I doubt that the car he usually had could have withstood a 150kg explosion at point blank range...I would be happy if you or someone else could post some hard figures about the ballistic protection level of his car.

I hate the Sindh government just as much as anyone else, but let's not propagate bullsh!t.

He was still travelling with 3 police mobiles with him (as usual), so which security detail are we talking about?

And in which case was this announced?

Rest in peace.
We don't tend to appreciate our heroes until they are gone.
