Rickshaw puller in Dhaka earns Tk 6,300 per month: JICA study

Do not be foolish here... I personally know how cheap the people of Kolkata are... N you are saying that they will spend 15 rupee only for 1 kilometer instead of walking... Last time when my cousin went to India for vacation he came across a man who used to take mutiple route and walk to save only 10 paisa.... When my dad went to kolkata for government inspection visit ... the indian representative advised my dad to buy matches when my dad was looking to buy a lighter as matches is cheap...

Keep satisfying your ego by using stereotypes, you ll go places. I don't think 10 paisa coin is even in circulation anymore.

BTW since we are talking coins and cheapness here, last time I was in Kolkatta there was a shortage of coins there. Later on I found out that Bangladeshis horde and smuggle Indian coins into Bangladesh as well. Go figure

for the sake of argument even if we accept that rickshaw puller charge 15 rupee for 1 or 2 kilo meter distance only it should have been said so instead giving a random figure to reflect it as a universal figure...

Its kinda obvious isn't it. Rickshaw pullers aren't supermen. They can only go so far. No one in India uses cycle rickshaws for long journeys. Here's a quote from the original article you posted.
The study said an average rickshaw puller carries 40 person a day, mostly in shorter trips with median size 2.4 kilometre.

A driver usually demands Tk 10 for every kilometre distance. The maximum distance he drives is 10km, it said.

As for the main argument you put forward using this article that rickshaw pullers earn 6300 Tk/month, so they can't possibly migrate to India. Let me give you some more stats here.

There are approx 0.5 Million rickshaws in Dhaka, lets say another 0.5 million in the rest of the country. So thats 1 million rickshaw pullers.

Labour Force of Bangladesh: 73.87 Million

Unemployment Rate: 5.1%=3.75 Million

Underemployed: 40%

So there are still loads of people who don't have work. Not everyone can become a rickshaw puller you know. Just like every other service, demand and supply rule goes for rickshaw business too.

Furthermore, not every rickshaw puller owns the rickshaw. They have to pay anywhere between 25-40% of their earnings to rent a rickshaw from the owner. Not sure if the average earning of 6300 Tk is after or before that rent.

Mind you am not contradicting the fact that rickshaw pullers earn this much. They deserve every bit of it. But if you are going to use that as a proof that there is no migration from Bangladesh into India then my logic tells me to disagree with you.

lol I didn't ever bother to reply his stupid posts!

10 poisa what the eff?

Kolkata has double the gdp of Dhaka being much less populated than Dhaka!

Okay let's check some stats here, shall we?

GDP per capita of Bangladesh = roughly 550$ or 40,000 Taka.

So taking an average Bangladeshis earn 40,000/12 = 3 333 taka per month.

But Rikshaw Pullers earn double the money in BD.

Hence the conclusion, Rikshaw pullers are white-collar workers in Bangladesh!

PS: I'd not have been so hard on you had you not try to pull off the 10 poisa stereotype!

. . .
First, tone down your posts. your anger betrays your frustration

Second, the 12 lakh number is the official number backed by official documents. When BSF made this claim, can you show me the BD govt rejected it, because this is people who came through legal channels and then disappeared, not some guesswork.

Third, I've already said I don't have anything for the 20 mil no, i've never used it too. but I do have the 12 lakh missing official number, you can say its india source etc etc but that has no value in an argument, its just denial and shows your rigid mindset.

For the sake of argument if I accept your 1.2 million figure still I would say it is no where near 20 million... 3-4 million at best considering the hindus who did not return... after 1971 war...

Fourth, yes bengalis have lived in Assam but in districts bordering BD their % has sky rocketed over the decades, this is not possible without immigration. this is from official census data, now you will say you don't believe indian census data, but want us to believe blog entries :)

Fifth, Why they come to Assam, for LAND. They have taken over and inhabited land. You must know there is scarcity of land in BD with population density of 1127 pr KM whereas Assams population density per km is 340, less than one third.

Keep your census data and diluted thought that bd people are migrating to assam due to empty land with you... When bd people were migrating what your BSF were doing....??? If true then just abolish this useless org...

Sixth, your overstretched logic based on some random claim abt rikshaw pullers has more holes than swiss cheese. The rikshaw puller index is the new mcdonals index but for immigration??? its not, nice try but contradicted by reality on the ground.

Seventh, all those rants about hindu radicals and all, take it easy. yes they don't like illigal immigrants, but that does not refute the reality of immigrants, as i've experienced them first hand.

For migration I have asked a simple question but none of you have answered it... I am asking it again....

where is the reduction of bd population for this??? N how come 20 million means 1400 people crossed Indian Border daily for the last 40 years...and what your brave BSF were and are doing??? Do not you think if this 20 million is really a truth then you should abolish this worth less org named BSF????

Regarding myth of illegal migration and ranting of radical hindu politicians this article is for you....

.
Firstly 20 Million is not the Indian Government figure. Secondly, a lot of Bangladeshi immigrants bear kids when in India, who are also counted as illegals. So all the Bangladeshis didn't come from Bangladesh , some were born in India, but still they ll be considered illegal migrants cause their parents are. Thats how it is all over the world.

Even then, if for arguments sake lets just agree that in the past 40 years, 20 Million Bangladeshis came to India from Bangladesh. I ll break it down for you how and why you wont see an impact on the Population of Bangladesh.

First thing first, Population of Bangladesh is 166 Million, so 20 Million migrants equals 8.3% and not 12.5% as per your claim.

Lets say country X has a population of 1000. 8.3% of 1000 migrate to Y over a period of 40 years. That is 83 people migrated to Y.

Now crude birth rate of X =24.68/1000 ,which incidentally is the same as birth rate of Bangladesh.

So in 40 years 24.68*40 kids were born. Thats 990 kids born in over 40 years.

Death rate of X= 8/1000, which incidentally is the same as death rate of Bangladesh.

in 40 years 8*40=320 people died.

So population of X after 40 years= (1000+990)-(83+320)=1587

Thats a growth rate of 1.162%, using I = (F / P) ^ (1 / T) - 1

So the population growth rate of country X after immigration is 1.162%, but the claimed growth rate is 1.292%

My calculation is a bit rough, but should prove whatever am trying to say.See how close these two growth rate figures are? So your argument that if 8.3% of the population of Bangladesh have migrated to India over 40 years, it would have a major effect on the Bangladesh population is wrong. Maybe the growth rate of Bangladesh would have been more than 1.292%, instead would have been 1.352% if it wasn't for the migration into India. I just have too much free time on my hand, but if you still don't get it , I give up.

P.S: If your reply is going to have words like"Bharti", "stupid" "idiotic" "joke" please don't bother replying then

If any one post any idiotic stuff what do you expect them to be mentioned.... But I will ask you a simple question have you passed High school???? My reason for asking this question is that how come you can not do a simple math??? At least in India people should have learned that is not it???

I have said 12.5% assuming total population 160 million...

Now divide 20 million with 160 million.... it will be 12.5% not your own making 8.3%

N your calculation has many flaws... 1st of all illegal migrants are mostly male not female... and considering that the birth rate you have assumed is also flawed... N if your brain says that reduction of 12.5% of the total population will not have any impact on the total population then you are just living in fools world... sorry if your ego is hurt for that... just for example imagine 150 million Indian population suddenly disappeared.... do not you think that it will have any impact on the total Indian population???? N more big question what your brave BSF were doing when on an average 1400 people were and are crossing to India daily.... I am repeating my suggestion again... If true do not you think that if this is really true then this useless org should have been abolished.???

First check your fact right before posting crap....

In India unemployment rate is 10.07% .... so it is better for you not to compare it with Bangladesh where unemployment rate is half of that of India...

Source...

List of countries by unemployment rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For India...

India Unemployment rate - Economy

Note that in the rich and developed India unemployment rate has increased from 2009 to 2010...

For Bangladesh...

Bangladesh Unemployment rate - Economy

But in this link for India unemployment rate has shown less...6.8%

India - Unemployment rate - Historical Data Graphs per Year

But unemployment rate of BD has been reduced here to 2.5%

Bangladesh - Unemployment rate - Historical Data Graphs per Year

But in whatever form unemployment rate of bd is much less then India then why should bd people need to move to poor India where unemployment is so high and more importantly has increased in the last year.... for an uncertain life leaving their families and risking their life????

N for the case of underemployment it is mainly due to female labor force... they work few hours or less to take care of their family and I do not think it is any better for India either....

PS: I'd not have been so hard on you had you not try to pull off the 10 poisa stereotype!

listen in 2009-2010 economic year Bangladesh has a per capita GDP of 751 USD as addressed by the president....

"Based on preliminary estimates of 5.83 percent GDP growth rate during 2009-10 fiscal year, the per capita income has now reached 751 US dollar and despite the negative impact of global recession, overall annual exports recorded a positive growth, 4.1 percent during 2009-10 fiscal, the President said."

GDP growth rate targeted at 8.0pc by 2013: President

N for India it is 1200 USD ... not any huge/ or very High per capita GDP that people of bd need to go there ....

N per capita gdp is not the main issue here but spending nature of the people... It is always known that people of kolkata are really cheap in terms of spending money... people of Mumbai and delhi may be generous than that of kolkata... People of Kolkata always want to save single penny that they can save... So they would prefer walking 1 kilo meter then giving 15 rs...

But whatever the matter the claim which is made by other fellow members that BD people are going to India to become rickshaw puller, house maid or even hawkers ... this is not only disgusting but also annoying....

If any one has that much money to go to distance places of India and buy a rickshaw or hire it from some one (at least I think in India no one just let people hire anything or give job without any background check) or buy stuff to be a hawkers... he or she can do it in Bangladesh.... no need to go such a long distance risking their life and living family for an uncertain life... in the poor India where more then 10% of the people are unemployed...

N regarding illegal migration none of you so far able to give us any proof that any given point total population of bd has decreased... due to this illegal migration which account 12.5% of the total Bangladeshi population...

I like your "poisa" spelling. :)

That dude has a fetish for BD garment industry and now rickshaw pullers !

Go check it out... BD earn more by exporting RMG then India .. n BD is now in a unique position to capture even most of the Indian domestic market...

So, it is quite obvious that your Indian government and businessman are so anxious about it as it will cost India loose billions of dollar worth of business and will cause loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs... India is so anxious that it even had to veto in WTO EU's giving some duty free benefit to Bangladesh... where as BD is much bigger player then Pakistan in RMG...

RMG likely to fetch $30b in three years

I hope to you 30 billion dollar is a very small number ... is not it???

.
That's a weird logic, US has 10% unemployment, hence Bangladeshis should not migrate to US as well!

Unemployment in the U.S. - Google Public Data Explorer

Actually it depends on the wages in various countries.

Bangladesh - Unemployment rate - Historical Data Graphs per Year

^That figure is even weirder! It shows Bangladesh unemployment went down from 40% at 2005 to 2.5 % at 2006! Well Hasina must have been doing pretty neat job there!

I would like to remind you 2006-2007 was the time of BNP government not hasina... and then care taker government... Hassina came in to power in 2008... So better give the credit to Khaleda Zia not Hassina.. but for the unemployment rate previous data were not refreshed.... or gathered correctly... I will have to check much older data then that say from 1990 for unemployment to see what was the actual rate... it is quite unlikely that in 2000-2005 unemployment was 40%... Anyway past story does not matter anything ... at present bd has less unemployment rate then India this is a fact..

N regarding going to USA.. even if it is 10% then people will go... there even if they do a blue color job they will earn more then 2000 USD ... so for a single person living with 1000 USD will result him saving another 1000 USD but for the case of poor India scenario is different... In india none will be able to save anything being a hawkers or rickshaw puller... n to live that sort of life people can do it in BD ...

But for the USA it is true that it is loosing its leading edge... Unemployment factor is an Indication... In the coming year more jobs will be transferred to China and other developing country which will cause more unemployment....

Are you Mumbaikar or Dilliwala? If not then stop speaking on behalf of them.

Seems the grudge towards Calcutta originated from a deep rooted jealousy, despite Calcutta being such a cheap city you people can't help coming here!

Anyway Canadian uni doesn't seem to work for you, let the purely Calcutta educated man to educate you further. ;)

GDP = private consumption + gross investment + government spending + (exports − imports)

So if the people in Cal don't consume and spend money, the GDP wouldn't have been even greater than your foster-city Delhi!

.

BD is even poorer, and it's easier to get into India than US!

I would not go in to much details... but will give only one example... see the cars in the road of kolkata... mostly backdated and old model.... just see the same in Delhi and mumbai and even dhaka... difference will be just in front of you... Car is obviously a commodity ... it just shows the nature of spending of the people of different cities...

According to Bangladesh's Census Report, the country had a population growth of over 2.4 per cent. It saw a decrease of more than six million voters within four years in the 1995 electoral roll. These missing voters and the increased number of voters during this period plus a disfranchised 20 lakh voters.
