Reusable hypersonic BRAHMOS should be developed: Dr. Kalam

This might be something similar to DARPA Falcon

here's more on it

The unmanned Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) is designed to fly through the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere at speeds of up to Mach 20, providing the US military with a possible platform for striking targets anywhere on the planet with conventional weapons.

The HTV-2 was launched last week aboard a Minotaur IV rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The test flight called for a 30-minute mission in which the vehicle would glide at high speed before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, north of a US military test site at the Kwajalein Atoll.
The glider separated from the booster but soon after the signal vanished, a spokeswoman said.

"Preliminary review of data indicates the HTV-2 achieved controlled flight within the atmosphere at over Mach 20. Then contact with HTV-2 was lost," Johanna Spangenberg Jones, a spokeswoman for DARPA, told AFP.

"This was our first flight (all others were done in wind tunnels and simulations) so although of course we would like to have everything go perfectly, we still gathered data and can use findings for the next flight, scheduled currently for early 2011," she said in an email.

The test flight was supposed to cover a total of 4,100 nautical miles (7,600 kilometers) from lift-off and scientists had hoped to conduct some limited maneuvers, with the HTV-2 banking and eventually diving for its splash down.

US aerospace giant Lockheed Martin builds the hypersonic glider, which the military calls "revolutionary."
The hypersonic program appears to fit in with US plans to develop a way of hitting distant targets with conventional weapons within an hour, dubbed "prompt global strike."
According to a Pentagon fact sheet for the vehicle, "the US military seeks the capability to respond, with little or no advanced warning, to threats to our national security anywhere around the globe."

A hypersonic plane could substitute for a ballistic missile armed with a conventional warhead, as other countries might suspect the missile represented a nuclear attack.
"Aside from its speed, another advantage is that it would not be mistaken by Russia or China for a nuclear launch," said Loren Thompson, an analyst with the Lexington Institute who has done consultant work for Lockheed Martin.
The US Air Force has also looked at hypersonic vehicles for intelligence-gathering if spy satellites in low orbit were attacked, he said.

. .
we should have at least 100 brahmos of this type.

No 10,000....yes I said 10,000....these are quick reaction missiles.....there usefulness in war is tremendous....fire ad forget....minimum loss of life, etc.

. .
lolz...are u kidding????

$ 30 billion for brahmoss???????????????:what: :undecided: :hitwall:

If we are making it why can't we subsidize the cost for the greater good? China has many, many missiles pointed at Taiwan. In history, the arrow was a great weapon because of its similarities to the modern day missile

. .
It the best weapon and we shouldnt look at the cost. If such a huge no. is to be made then its better to make it like MRBL with each battery 20 warheads.

And you want to send another 400 million into poverty?

There should be defence spending, but not an overspending.

Show me an enemy to justify your spending of just $30 billion on Brahmos-II alone?

Did i mention any where $30 billion figure?
U know the history of India?
We were looted every time past 1000 years . Why?
Because of less defence and military capacities. Independent missiles would cost much, so reusable missiles/UCAV's should be used.

Brahmos-I costs $2.1+ million depending on variant. As a rule of thumb, Brahmos-II( reusable) should be times more than that. And for that 10,000 missiles the cost will be upward of $30 billion.......

And regarding the history of India and foreign invaders,

India was invaded ,not because it didnt have proper military. It was invaded in the past only because the whole sub-continent used to be ruled by different kings. Even during Alexander invasion, same story. When porus was against Alexander, Nanda supported Alexander and didnt opposed his moves. IF you didnt really know the history, all indian kingdoms were well equipped militarily and were well spent.Hence the reason there was lot of insecurity among different kingdoms and has to fight all thier lives. As a matter of fact, it was all politics. Taking a leaf from the same chanakyan," enemies enemy is my friend".We pretty much let the invaders in by ourself.

Reusable means it will not cost more than that. When using for second time, it doesnt cost more. Only fuel and some additional things will cost. A missile can be used 10 times means 1000 reusable missiles are enough it means not $30 billion but $3-5 billion . Atmost $10million, its not an aircraft that can be used 1000's of times.
See the word carefully Reusable. Reusable doesnt make the sense of 10,000 missiles, it means 10,000 warheads/sub missiles. U r mistaken that we should have 10,000 reusable missiles. If it is reusable , then what is the use of 10,000 delivery systems.
---
U are wrong, what happened in 1962 when every Indian kingdom was united?Know that China would have not dared to attack us if we had proper military. Why pakistan refused to attack India after death of Laden? Not because it wants peace. Because we had good military relations with US and others.

Reusable ones technically costs more than disposable ones.
In the case of an AVATAR or Brahmos-II( re-usable) you need to work more on the airframe to give more lifetime than compared to routine 20 min flight. Not only that more metalurgical advances needed for the scramjet combustor to withstand many life cycles than compared to the normal 10 min( max) for fire and forget ones.
And more aerodynamics and airframe requirements put the design and build costs up. we will be looking an AVATAR like at around $ 15-20 million( usable for an average 100 launches).Though its economical if put into mass production and build more than a couple of hundreds.

Sorry ,you are mistaken and failed to understand how military strength and strategy works in conjunction. 62 war loss can be attributed to as many things. It lacked leadership, strategic thinking, intelligence and most importantly lacked the much needed guts. If that stupid nehru didnt have took the US words for granted, the skirmish would have got an air support and kicked the arse of enemies.

And regarding the US thing, my words will certainly hurt the feelings on many members here, including those of US sympathisers.
