Respect internet freedom, US tells India

Rumours are far more dangerous in developing countries (e.g. China/Pakistan/India), due to the lower level of education and literacy, and the much lower police enforcement to population ratio.

It's all very well and nice for the West to lecture developing countries on this, since they were already developed many decades ago. Long before internet/sms rumours were a problem.

It is easy for an incompetent government to blame its own failure on the internet. There is only one way to fight disinformation you confront it with facts not censorship. Why do you think CENTCOM is a PDF member?

Government agencies actively monitoring social media in all countries including India. If disinformation has the potential to create panic or anger the government should use any means necessary (radio/TV/Internet/SMS) to keep everyone informed and calm.

The Indian government was asleep at the wheel and copped out by blaming the internet.

I don't care, as long as PDF is not banned.

We value our Indian friends PoV here! :D

I agree with DBC. Just a slight correction. The government is not sleeping. It is dead.

Congress govt is using this situation to remove all anti-congress sites and messages from internet, which are in tons.

@CD: I am first time agreeing with you. The rumors are more dangerous in developing countries. In current situation, the exodus of northeast people started because of rumours and not because of any physical harm (except one or two incidents)

Actually I also thought that PDF might be banned because there was one burma riot thread where wrong images were posted as linked to riots.
My favourite time pass would have lost.

Yep, even the smallest developed countries like Greece have law enforcement problems. With a large number of criminals getting away with their crimes.

Now think about a "developing" country with 1+ billion people. Even in a country like China with such a powerful state machinery, I am guessing there are still tens of millions of people (or more) who could theoretically break the law and get away with it no problem.

There are simply too many people, too much area to cover, and a law enforcement system/infrastructure that is not up to par with developed countries.

LOL. You remind me of childhood friend, son of the Indian Ambassador to Islamabad in the 80's, could never say "Maza" and my name. My name has an "S" in it, and he would always use "SH" :D

This shall drive home the point to miscreants that this medium is being observed for potential mischief.

Furthermore, having learnt the hard way necessary steps would be put in place hopefully to prevent re occurrence of a fiasco at such a scale.
