India handed over a number of vehicles to Nepal’s election commission on Monday, following through on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance to assist in the country’s upcoming local elections.

Indian ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri handed over more than 80 two-wheelers and four-wheelers to chief election commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav as logistical support for the May 14 elections.

The vehicles include 35 double cabin pickups, seven Scorpio jeeps, four sedan cars, one each of sports utility vehicle, minibus and microbus, as well as 30 pulsar motorcycles and seven scooters. Besides the Nepal election commission, the Nepal home ministry also had requested 1,000 vehicles from India.

Procured at a cost of 89.17 million Nepali rupees, the vehicles would be used for deploying men and material in different parts of the country for conducting of elections, sources said.

Ambassador Puri reiterated India’s firm commitment to successful organising of the polls.

In the past also India had provided vehicles and other logistical assistance on the request of Nepal. During the second Constituent Assembly elections, India had gifted 48 vehicles to the election commission and 716 vehicles to security agencies in Nepal.
