Help this poor student stuck in the maze of choosing career :hitwall:

please share your experience and advise me on my career

..............................
i am interested in technology and humanitarian work......
i would choose my engineering college (i think pretty fked up 1) this year.....

now i have 3 options after engg....

1) Do MBA (though have to generate interest)

2) Do M.Tech (have interest and nice pay tooo....)

3) Prepare for UPSC and become IAS/IFS officer (this enables me to be the "babu" and become a part of the system to do something for the people of my nation......)

now i am confused in option no 2 & 3 as my interest for both of them is equal

IAS/IFS is job security... great authority...respected by every part of the society ..... but pay is low... and i dont wanna take bribes....

M.Tech is good but i have 1 confusion in my mind....
doing BE/BTech from not so reputed engineering college would affect my career even if i do Masters from reputed college?????

please answer me................. i think you can see how desperate i am ... asking career advise on a defence forum :hitwall:

Reeeeeeeeeeeelpppppppppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!!

:D

PS: for Pakistani members

IAS: Indian Administrative Services
IFS: Indian Foreign Services
UPSC: Union Public Service Commision (Conducts Highly competitive exam)

.
If your grades are good from your UG Engg college and have done some extra work apart from college studies and have good GRE and AGRE score, top universities will accept you! I think MBA is only useful if one has some work experience in industry..so get a job and do some years in IT company and then go for MBA!

but people here say everything is crap except IIT's and NIT's.....

what i meant to ask was if i do BE/Tech from not so reputed college and get good grades and have nice score in GATE/GRE/AGRE ...... would those reputed universities still accept me????
and what exactly are you suggesting.... Masters in Tech or Business Administration....

From people whom I know, guys from PESIT, Sri Venkataswra, CEG Guindy, Manipal, COE Pune with excellent gardes have ended up in top notch universities like Stanford, Cornell, UMinn Twin Cities, Purdue,, UCLA, UC Berkeley. Even some guys from IP univ have also gone to places such as UPenn, Carnigie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Columbia. So I would say though IITians always have an edge but normal grads with excellent credentials can also get into Ivy leagues and high ranking universities.
I would suggest if you want to do Masters in Engg better do from United States than India!

I can only advise/guide wrt to MS/Mtech/Phd no MBA for me!

Oh yes I totally forgot to mention, if you consider yourself good but can't get into universities like Stanfy and all. Better get some good work experience of like 2 years. Here in US, even for internships they look into previous work experience :woot::woot: So it's better to have some Software Developer profile before coming to US for masters and yes by Software Developer I mean, writing code not doing things like SAP or Oracle applications. Here they need people who have analytical minds and good in programming.

I don't think activities count, try publishing some papers in tech journals which are recognized! certifications are useless..try showing some interesting projects which are expected from B.Tech students.

you will waste two years by doing mtech. a guy with btech and 2yrs exp earns lot more than a fresher with mtech. :)

If sole criteria is money making why do Engineering at first, try doing some business, even a punjabi dhabba with bar license owners earns as much as 10 Btech students! money is short term interest, long term is what u really wanna do! moreover in today's world having a Master's degree is imperative. Doesn't look nice wife with Masters degree and a husband with Bachelor degree,:cheers:
