My question is
every soldier in the Army should belong to a regiment?
and
Is it the soldiers choice which regiment he wants to be a part of ? or they are apointed?

You fill a form for your preferences, then the related department of GHQ ascertains your qualities and academic performance and allots you a arm keeping in mind your preferences.

There is something called as family preference or something like that. Basically, that means that if your father also served in the Army, you are in a good position to go into that same arm or regiment.

For example, if somebody's father was in 8 Punjab, then the cadet has good chances of being allotted 8 Punjab if he wants.

all soldiers / officers belong to one of the fighting arms. the cream of the crop of the PMA are given a 'choice' to join their 'family' regiment or the Senior Under Officer will influence the cadets preference. all others go where there are 'shortages' based on their strengths and skills at the PMA.

Regarding the "President's Bodyguard" (PBG), does this regiment trace it's lineage to 1773?
I've read that the Governer General's Bodyguard was split between Pakistan and India, if it does, wouldn't this make the PBG the oldest serving unit in the Pakistan Army?

some colonial traditions have been eliminated. now you go where you are needed. once designated your family can use influence to get you at least in the same regiment.
