It is still practiced in our household but I do agree the new generation might not be as charitable!Amongst our elders everyone did, but amongst the British born less so. Our elders lived simpler lives and gave everything they had extra to families and the less fortunate, we spend more on things like cars, expensive houses, designer clothes etc. People still give to charity but perhaps as not a high percentage of thier spare income as our elders did.
