since centuries
most of the Arab who moved to Iraq from peninsula converted to Shiite Islam other wise the cities dwellers are almost the same in population but the Arab relocation to Iraq made the Shiite majority
Iraq today almost 40 millions
the Shiite around 25 millions
Kurds and sunnis around 10 millions
the other minorities around 3 millions
More recent migration to Southern Iraq (not only as Central, Western and Northern Iraq, Jazira in particular, was affected as well) from mostly Najd but not only (Hijaz as well and other regions) does not equal "Arab migration".
The people who migrated to Iraq already had relatives, fellow clan and tribal relatives all over Iraq. There have been successive migrations for the past 3000 years. 2850 years to be precise (written records mind you).
As Arabs already lived in modern-day Iraq almost 3000 years ago.
Migration (for millennia) also occurred the other way around although it is less mentioned from Iraq, Sham, Egypt etc. into the Peninsula. Probably just as much.
In fact ancient rulers of Babylonia and Assyria used to live in Tayma (Northern KSA) (winter capital) and dozens of rulers retired there. Northern KSA being part of Babylonian, Assyrian empires and Sumer probably played a role.
German-made documentary about this interesting and ancient part of history.
Anyway it is true that mostly more recent Najdi Arab clans and tribes that migrated to Southern Iraq, many of them, adopted Shia Twelver Islam. Although many remained Sunni which is why it is very, very normal for Iraqi Arab tribes and clans to have both Sunni and Shia members and that has never had any negative impact.
For instance 300 years ago most of Southern Iraq was majority Sunni with Shias mostly being confined to Karbala and Najaf.
Anyway Najd used to be ruled by Shia dynasties (Alids = Hashemites) for 3.5 centuries as brother @SALMAN F rightly wrote about in another thread on the Arab section.
