Rangers claim arrest of 'most wanted' hitman with links to MQM


KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers Sindh claimed to have arrested a target killer associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) during a search operation in Karachi's Azizabad area early Tuesday.

"Mohammad Kashif alias David, who belongs to the MQM, is a most wanted criminal in multiple targeted killing and terrorism incidents," Rangers official Colonel Faisal told media representatives.

He said the operation was carried out on a tip-off close to MQM's Nine Zero headquarters.

A cache of weapons and ammunition, including Kalashnikovs, light machine guns (LMGs) and Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-7), and Rangers uniforms were recovered during the operation, in which several houses were searched.

The suspect was shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

At a meeting in the Karachi Corps Headquarters earlier this month, army chief Gen Raheel Sharif termed lasting peace in Karachi the “ultimate aim” of the Rangers-led Karachi operation, which was launched over two years ago.

For a little over a year, MQM has been under the spotlight when it comes to the Rangers-led operation. In March 2015, Rangers personnel detained a number of MQM workers, including senior members such as Amir Khan, in a pre-dawn raid on the party's headquarters.

The raid, which prompted a protest by party activists, appeared to have symbolic significance in the Karachi operation that has been underway since October 2013.

Most recently, Rangers arrested MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Shahid Pasha in a raid on his residence last month.

In a video message posted on their Facebook page, the paramilitary force requested citizens to send information about terrorism, extortion and any kind of illegal or supicious activity to their WhatsApp number 0316-2369996 or email them at rangers.madadgar@gmail.com, adding that the force is able to curtail such activities in the city with people's support through their telephone helpline 1101.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) rejected on Tuesday the Rangers’ claim that Mohammad Kahif alias David was arrested in a raid in the Azizabad area late on Monday night, saying it was a blatant lie because he was arrested in Dubai last year.

MQM leader Kunwar Naveed Jameel told a press conference at the Khursheed Begum Memorial Hall that Kashif had been in the custody of law-enforcement agencies since his arrest in 2015.

The news of his arrest had not been aired on the electronic media, but many newspapers had published stories last year, he added.

Jameel said Kashif’s family members had been in touch with the law-enforcement agencies and contacted the relevant quarters in Dubai and Pakistan for his safe recovery.

The detainee’s family members, including his wife and parents, attended Tuesday’s press conference and showed all correspondence made to the authorities, including Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. The parents had complained to the interior minister about the “illegal arrest” of their son and his detention at an undisclosed destination.

Jameel said that just as the news of Kashif’s arrest was false, the claim about the discovery of a huge cache of arms was also incorrect and exposed the true intentions of the Rangers.

He said Kashif’s wife was also present when the MQM staged a sit-in outside the Karachi Press Club the other day for the recovery of missing persons.

The MQM leader said it was strange that the Rangers, said to be a reputable institution, was point-scoring and had shown Kashif’s arrest several months after actually taking him into their custody.

He said termed Monday night’s development part of the paramilitary force’s policy to portray the MQM as a terrorist party.

He added that continuous arrests of his party’s supporters and activists and labelling them as terrorists were
meant to malign the party just to justify the operation against it.

He appealed to the chief justices of the Supreme Court and the Sindh High Court to take notice of what he called “illegal and unconstitutional arrests”.

The Rangers had earlier claimed catching Kashif during a serach operation in the Azizabad area over charges of his involvement in target killings.

During a pre-dawn raid on the MQM headquarters, Nize Zero, in March last year, paramilitary soldiers had detained a number of party workers and senior members, including Aamir Khan.

Last month, Rangers arrested MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Shahid Pasha in a late-night raid on his residence.

Senior MQM leader Nadeem Nusrat lauded a statement given by PPP Senator Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan condemning the media ban on Altaf Hussain’s speeches, saying that the restriction was not only illegal but also a violation of Article 19 of the constitution.

No one defending here criminals, why you always acting like crazy when a news or opinion of opponent party share here? His wife and family claiming that he arrested last year and they show the proves in press conference the communications regarding his arrest even with Ch.Nisar. Arrest any .....hole who involved in criminal activity why we need a false drama to show on media? For a single lie you produce dozen other lies to defend yourself, right? I want to believe but facts which lays on a lie hard to believe. If he is criminal there is two way we have now 1. Put him on trial where rangers want 2. Encounter. Believe me third option which using now help no one but strong MQM stance ( supporters ) that all this staged drama against them is pre planned to defame the party which create more soften attitude among workers supporters instead of leaving them.
Haider Imam Rizvi is a big name who recently join MQM with a high court judge. Today a prominent PPP ex leader join them with a well know Karachi lawyer, a PTI ( MNA ) candidate leave a night before and join MQM. Again I'm advising here try to learn and understand how karachietes think and move.
