Rana Plaza Collapse (huge life losses)

No one could have foreseen the catastrophe to hit, and hit so hard. Mr. Rana, the bldg. Owner is the main culprit who committed a major sin by using low quality construction materials in the building.

Please lay off with your out of place and out of touch crap. Everyone saw the "catastrophe to hit" day before when crack was found and engineers advised building not to be used. That is why BRAC bank did not open and workers left the building on previous day. But Awami League forced these workers to come next day to prepare them as shield against anti regime movement.

Construction not upto code is another matter in broader schema of things. But in this speciifc tragedy, it could have avioded if Awami League political agenda was not in the way.

Here Awami politician Mahmudur Rahman Manna clearly admitting that garments workers were forced to come to the building to prep them to be used as shield against anti regime mass movement.

Please cut him some slack, idune Bhai. Our eastwatch Bhai is a distinguished and established professional in his field and a fluent Japanese speaker, I am guessing. It is unfortunate that at times he seems to attempt to protect the AL regime for some reason, but at times he does not. I am guessing, this is because of family and regional ties, as he may hail from near Gopalganj area. And I do not think he is anti-Islam or anti-Muslim, but anti-extremist and anti-Islamist, a stand I do not disagree with.

And long overseas stays for many people like us, has a tendency to make us out of touch. But hanging out in a forum like this keeps us closely in touch, as we get in depth information. But despite this, some people like him choose to follow a certain line, while others do not follow the same line. In a democracy, we have to be tolerant of divergent views, instead of being acrimonious.

R.I.P... the building should have been closed weeks before... and such a mass crowd (prior to the collapse) going for their belonging should not have been allowed

Rana Plaza at a glance:

* One Hindu's land was occupied by this Jubo League ***** Rana (that wretched fellow must have shouted saying "khoisha/dhoisha porbo").
* It was a pond then.
* Probably plan was passed for 6-story building, later he raised another 3 floors.
* No building code was followed while it was developed.

Don't know what untold stories of oppression on workers are with the building but we know that on 24th April some of them were beaten to get inside and work. Who can protect it from collapsing?

Some facts about the building...

Rana got permission to build the building in 2006 when he was a teen in his early 20s.

He built it and opened it in 2010.

Though it was supposed to be a shopping mall and top floors were supposed to be office building, he extended the building from 6 to 9 floor and rented them to garment factories.

None of the Garment factories belonged to Rana as they have their own owner so I am wondering how these 2000-3000 workers were brought here and as said by one of the poster above that they were beaten and forced to enter into the building to stage anti protest movement by Rana???

If they were supposed to stage anti protest movement were there any necessity for them to enter the building???

What was the profit of the factory owner by letting their worker stage an anti opposition rally???

But this is sickening me how the Jamaatis and some of their associates are trying to propagate propaganda using the tragic incident. This is quite pathetic.

To me the main culprits were the factory owners who kept the garmet factory open and asked the worker to come for working and forced them to work. If they would have kept the factory closed this incident would not have happened in such a big scale. Example is BRAC Bank kept it's office closed.

These are the main culprit owner...

Detail of their ownership of those factories has been discussed in the news link.

But thanks to some section of media and Jamaati propaganda campaign their name have not been discussed any where even remotely but seems the main criminal of these incident.

Now lets talk about Rana...

He belongs to a very poor family. He along with his father used to sell oil as a hawkers in Munshiganj/Manikganj... In his 20s he came to Savar and became the personal body guard of Muran Jong the Local BAL MP and became one of the most richest and influential person in Savar.

He was involved in drug business, looting, robbing, land grabbing and even murder but was out of touch of any body as he was the body guard of Murad Jong. Later being pleased with his performance Murad sold (obviously with money) one of the BAL position that he is occupying right now to him though he was not a member of Awami league/ Jubo League.

He is also one of the main criminal mastermind of this event as Rana built the building violating the building code. The designer of the building and other government agencies should be brought to justice those who were involved with the construction of the building.

Rana did another big crime by keeping the building open for leading a procession against the strike which was called by opposition that he did earlier most of the time which also gave the factory owner an excuse to keep the garments open.

This link details the involvement of Rana in to BAL and his relationship with Murad Jong:

All the MP like Murad Jond should be brought to justice for patronizing such criminals for their own gain and to make illegal property and wealth. What Rana has become Murad Jong was behind him from top to bottom. He should also be brought to justice though he is not involved with this incident directly and should act as an example for other MP what may happen to them if they resort to such activities in the future.

If BAL let go Rana they will have to pay a high price for it. We need to change the political culture that if someone is from his/her party then he/she should be defended even when he/she is the criminal.

It seems even some BNP politicians are happy with this sad and tragic incident...

Even foreign HR organization has spoken up but deafening silence from Awami HR chief in such colossal tragey, this is how people reflecting on Awami HR chief Mizanur Rahman silence.

Here are killers of hundreds of garments workers, Awami League MP of savar Murad Jong and his side kick Sohel Rana in intimate moment. Also see the video where Dhaka University Law professor asking to take Awami League MP in custody and question him on this awami League massacre. But Awami League and it thugs and their cheerleaders are desperately using human sufferings and market loss they have orchestrated as shield for their escape. All the while garments workers who are protesting to catch these killers and responsible, Awami genocidal force is shooting at them.

Rescue teams remain hopeful of finding survivors trapped underneath a factory complex that collapsed on Wednesday in Bangladesh, killing some 350 people.

So far on Sunday, one more person has been pulled from the rubble, with efforts now focusing on another six.

Emergency services are now deciding how long to pursue efforts to find survivors.

Twenty-nine were rescued on Saturday and two engineers were arrested, but the building's owner is still missing.

The engineers were alleged to have approved the building's safety a day before it came down were arrested.

Police said they had ordered an evacuation of the building on Tuesday after cracks appeared in the structure on Tuesday, but that the factories ignored them and were operating the next day.

The owners of three of the five clothing factories inside were also detained after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised that those responsible would be hunted down.

They face preliminary charges of causing death by negligence.

However, the overall owner of the complex, Sohel Rana, reportedly a leader of the youth wing of the ruling Awami League, is in hiding and has so far avoided arrest. Police have detained Mr Rana's wife in an effort to persuade him to hand himself in.

There are many dead bodies but our top priority is finding those who may still be alive”

One minister has alleged that Rana Plaza was built without permits.

'She must return'
Thousands of relatives of missing workers gathered at the site to watch as survivors and the dead were pulled from the rubble on Saturday.

Police said that 353 bodies had so far been found, 301 of which had been identified. A further 2,431 people are known to have survived.

There is no official figure on the number of people still missing, but Akram Hossain, a deputy director of the fire service, said their chances of survival were "diminishing by the minute".

The fire service's head of operations, Mahbubur Rahman, said the rescue effort was becoming increasingly difficult for emergency workers as survivors were losing their strength to call for help.

"There are many dead bodies but our top priority is finding those who may still be alive," he told the Agence France-Presse news agency. "There are some survivors. We can hear their feeble cries or hear them talking to each other."

Mr Rahman said rescuers were digging tunnels through the rubble with bare hands, drills and shovels because they feared heavier equipment could cause further collapse.

Some 2,431 people are known to have survived the building collapse
"Pillars and beams are the biggest problem. Sometimes, even if we can locate survivors, we can't reach them because of these beams. They take a lot of time to cut through."

One of those who was rescued on Saturday, Merina Begum, said she and seven other workers had survived without food or water. She told AFP: "When the rescuers brought juice, ice cream and cold water, it was the tastiest food I've ever had."

Meanwhile, a man wept as he waited for news of his wife, who worked at one of the factories. "My son says that his mother will come back some day. She must return!" Abul Basar told the Associated Press.

Bangladesh has one of the largest garment industries in the world, providing cheap clothing for major Western retailers that benefit from its widespread low-cost labour.

But the industry has been widely criticised for its low pay and limited rights given to workers and for the often dangerous working conditions in garment factories.
