Monsoon rains 49 percent below average in past week

A shortfall in monsoon rains has widened to nearly 50 percent of average in the past week, making a revival next week crucial for farmers to sow summer-planted crops such as rice, corn, cane, cotton and soybean.

The annual rains are crucial for farm output and economic growth as about 55 percent of the South Asian nation's arable land is rain-fed.

No rain yet in North India, power crisis worsens

New Delhi: India's largest dam, the Bhakra Nangal, has reached a critical level and there is a similar situation at seven reservoirs in the North. This has worsened the power situation further with major outages across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

False rain forecasts: Centre slams Delhi met dept

New Delhi: It seems that Delhiites’ long wait for rains is not likely to end anytime soon given the false monsoon predictions by the meteorological department.

Delhi’s meteorological department has once again given a new date for the onset of rains on Thursday. If one goes by the announced date of the met dept, then Delhiites won’t be able to get any respite from the scorching heat and humidity in the days ahead. The earlier predictions made by met dept have proved to be wrong as rains haven’t hit the capital so far.

The absence of rains and meteorological department’s false predictions has even raised the temper of the Central government. The government has written a letter to the met department asking why there is inaccuracy in the prediction of exact date of monsoon. It has been instructed that met department should collect data from all other states and analyse it and corrections should be made.

In May, meteorological department predicted that monsoon will come on June 29. Ten days before, it was said that monsoon will be delayed by six days. Similarly, five days before, it was said that monsoon will come till 5-6th June. But, looking at the hot temperature which refuses to come down, it seems that this time also meteorological department is all set to prove itself wrong.

According to meteorological department, Monsoon has arrived in parts of Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan but it will take at least four-five days for heavy rains to come in the entire country.

The normal onset date for south-west monsoon in the capital is June 29.During monsoon, the Weatherman says, if the city gets 645.7 mm of rains, it is considered normal for the capital.

Most India haters here have it here on this forum.

And yes. Rains are a problem this year and it will be difficult. It will not only lead to higher inflation, but also hit growth numbers even more. Lets wait and see. Monsoon still not over. So there is hope.
