Regio Aviasi Industri to Manufacture Planes by 2018i
Jakarta.
Indonesian aviation company Regio Aviasi Industri plans to start local production of passenger aircraft from 2018, to tap local demand.

Agung Nugroho, president director of RAI, told reporters on Tuesday that the company was planning to build 400 units of the R80 turboprop passenger aircraft over 20 years.

He said RAI was now in the final stage of its preliminary design for the aircraft, which will have a carrying capacity of between 80 and 90 passengers.

The company will soon enter the second phase of the project, which involves detail design and prototype manufacturing.

Serial production of the aircraft will start in 2018.

RAI will collaborate with state aviation manufacturer Dirgantara Indonesia to produce the aircraft, Agung said.

RAI is affiliated with former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie and his son Ilham Habibie.

Agung said the aircraft will meet demand from local airlines. Indonesia’s aviation industry has grown by 19 percent per annum in the past few years.

“We have signed letters of intent with two national airlines — KalStar Aviation and NAM Air,” Agung said.

He said NAM Air — a unit of Sriwijaya Air — plans to buy 100 of the R80 planes, while KalStar, a Pontianak-based airline, plans to buy 25.

Agung said RAI’s biggest competitor in Indonesia was Italian-French aircraft builder ATR (Avions de Transport Regional, or Aerei da Transporto Regionale) and Bombardier of Brazil.

He said RAI’s aircraft will have bigger capacity and better fuel efficiency than the ATR and Bombardier aircraft.

Agung did not reveal the investment amount required to build the planes.

RAI president commissioner Ilham Habibie said the company planned to further develop the R80 to a capacity of 100 passengers.

“Indonesia, as an archipelagic country, will always need air transport. Smaller planes are also needed for island-hopping,” Ilham said.

He added that beside KalStar Aviation and NAM Air, other national airlines that were interested in the R80 were Wings Air, Sky Aviation, Citilink and Merpati Nusantara.

RAI on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding with France’s Dassault Systemes to help with the production of R80. Dassault Systemes will provide the platforms and solutions in detail design and manufacturing of the plane.

That's a pleasant surprise since no other country in Islamic world has been producing passenger airplanes especially the regional jetliner. I feel this will be even better than many other new airplanes coming from countries like China where things have been forcefully accelerated instead of the natural evolution and maturity of the aviation industry. What I wish is that Pakistan, Turkey and Indonesia and other Muslim nations join hands to develop aerospace sector in the Muslim world through cooperation and collaboration both for civilian and military purposes.

Exactly, that was one of motivations to share it here. Pakistan has been making military aircrafts under license or its own production like K8, Mashaq, JF-17 similarly Turkey has been producing F-16 under license and has also been involved in F-35 while Indonesia has the best of them all i.e. the capability to design and develop its own aircraft and they have been producing C-130 under license so it provides a strong base to extend their capabilities through joint-ventures.

Pak is pretty stupid to not jump on the Ukrainian offer to JV on AN series..

The aircraft could have been used for both military and civilian purposes..

We could/can have a homegrown ATR competitor.

PT. Dirgantara Indonesia currently trying to expand their business by diversifying their products and entering civil aviation market. Beside PT.Regio Aviasi that plan to introduce R80, PT. DI with the help of LAPAN will also develop 50 & 70 seat passenger airplance (N245 & N270) after the whole certification process for N219 is completed.

This could be an opportunity (or not?) for Pakistan and other interested parties to jointly develop regional passenger airplane for the future.

Well actually this is an old project since 1998. It was cancelled due to Asian financial crisis at that time. Had that never happened, we could've developed variants of the R80 (formerly known as N250).

Another that is missing is our Electric Car project though. A prototype has been made since the late 2015 but it was cancelled because of bureaucratic retardation.

Well fortunately, a revive program is set to be active this year!

Well actually this is an old project since 1998. It was cancelled due to Asian financial crisis at that time. Had that never happened, we could've developed variants of the R80 (formerly known as N250).

That could ba a blessing in disguise. In the past project, we were too dependent on foreign expertise to help us develop N250. But today is completely different game. No more foreign assistance, so we could proudly say that these (N219,N245,N270) are Indonesian airplanes.

Relax. Your is just in the preliminary design stage. Our jet project start dating back to the 1970s. It wasn't until we master industrial mass manufacturing of aerospace that we start to seriously going all in. For you to say this jet is going to be better than our is laughable.

I have more faith on LAPAN & PT. Dirgantara Indonesia with their (N219,N245,N270) projects than PT. Regio Aviasi with their R80 project...

Their ideas gives input for ours, and our ideas gives input to them. Similiarly, foreigner also appreciates the assistance that comes from Indonesian collaborator.

I just trying too see the light. I have no objection what so ever for foreign involvement to help us develop our defense or hitech industry. As we all see today there are trends in Indonesia to absorb technological expertise from abroad to accelerate our progress. And that strategy proven to be work quite well. But i don't see any point for looking back and feel sorry about the past, what's done is done. And if LAPAN and PT.DI today think that they can revive those initiative by their own strength why not?

China is very much ahead of Indonesia in aerospace but this is good to see.

B. J. Habibie is a marvellous engineer and pioneer of aviation industry in Indonesia. It is amazing to know that he was the president of Indonesia in 1998.
