Rafale, Super Hornet and Gripen waging 'war' for the sale of fighter
Ironies, and contracts autoelogios parallel strategies of manufacturers are French, American and Swedish billionaire seeking a contract with Brazil
Postponing the decision on the fighters that will retool the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) placed the three manufacturers competing in an atmosphere of anything goes. Ironies of the early agreements between adversaries with Brazilian companies, the actions promoted in the "waiting time" show that the French, Americans and Swedes are at "war" in this dispute. It is estimated that the negotiation of the F-X2, Brazilian program for the purchase of 36 fighters that will enhance the fleet of combat aircraft, move numbers between $ 10 billion and $ 25 billion over the next 30 years.
"If the Brazilian government ready to buy fighter planes, which is much more expensive, will be making a kind of barter", Bengt Janer fires, representative of the Swedish Saab. The company promises to build the Gripen NG (Next Generation) in partnership with engineers from Embraer. "We are increasing the scope of the game in more than 40%, we will install new weapons, radars, sensors, computers and software. And we propose to do this with the Brazilian industry. "
"The F-18 (Super Hornet) and Rafale have similar operational capacity, although the small Rafale take advantage and be more modern. The Gripen is compared to our Mirage 2000, the previous generation of fighters, "Jean-Marc Merialdo rebate, the French consortium. "We are optimistic. The government has changed, but the proposals have not changed. And, therefore, did not change the assessment that can be made of each one of them, "boasts the Rafale on the preference by the Brazilian government announced until 2010.
"Boeing is a company that the two largest competitors combined. Our price is the lowest and the only proven. The Gripen has even been built and is experiencing Rafale combat situations for the first time now (in Libya), "disdains Thomas C. Dewald, Boeing. "The operational capability of the Super Hornet is always stressed, especially when compared to two competitors," continues Dewald.
Running out
With the exception of Americans, representatives of the Rafale and the Gripen swear they were not informed by the Brazilian government on the deadline for the choice is announced. "The government has told us that the decision will be made later this year, but no payment until 2012," says Thomas Dewald, anticipating rivals.
Although shows with inside information about the event, the American company is the only one that has an office in Brasilia and not formalized parallel negotiations with Brazilian businessmen. "We take this time to better understand the market. We have discussions well advanced in biofuels, "says the Boeing executive.
Avant-garde in this mission, the French Rafale consortium (composed by Dassault, Snecma and Thales) use what they call "free time" to invest with the Brazilian business. Asked whether the initiative can secure more support for the purchase of the Rafale, Jean-Marc Merialdo does not hesitate: "It's possible."
Negotiations so far have yielded agreements with 42 companies - especially the region of Sao Bernardo do Campo (SP) - which won guaranteed to be the supplier if the group is chosen as the Rafale fighter jet of the FAB.
"We take the delay of the decision to promote a series of seminars in order to approach the Brazilian industry, especially smaller," adds Merialdo. "Among those potential partners are also pointing out the universities and training centers, because we support our companies with the training of qualified staff. Not that Brazil does not have them, but the demand is much higher than the existing one. "
In May, Sweden's Saab launched the Center for Research and Innovation Swedish-Brazilian, also in St. Bernard. The announced investment was $ 50 million within five years. Currently, the center is managed independently and together companies linked to the Swedish project.
The French say that the Rafale is elected may contribute up to $ 13 billion in Brazil, "generating activities" with the industry partners.
