Oron Oriol, Executive Vice President of Business Development & Marketing at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd on sidelines of Paris Airshow 2015 unveiled new long-range air-to-air missile I-Derby ER BVRAAM, this new addition increases the range of the I-Derby ER beyond 100 km, significantly more than its current “short/medium” range capability.
Oriol also confirmed that new I-Derby Extended Range (ER) BVRAAM has been offered to India for the next generation LCA Tejas (MK-2) / AMCA. India already is integrating Rafael fifth generation short range Python-5 missiles on LCA Tejas and Indian Navy is already using I-Derby missiles with Sea Harriers.
I-Derby Extended Range (ER) is the latest variant coming from the legendary Derby missile family which was first introduced in mid-1990s. ER uses a unique Dual Pulse rocket motor, enabling it to extend interception range up to 100 km. The missile also boasts of features which are LOAL and Lock On Before Launch (LOBL) capability and all-weather operation and Look down/Shoot-down.
The second pulse motor is initiated by the missile’s flight control system [auto pilot] when the missile is closing on its target and needs rapid acceleration to force a No escape Zone on its target. New Seeker is derived from Tamir missile which is used in Iron Dome Interceptor system.
India will be using an Isreali provided AESA radar for LCA Tejas 1P and Tejas MK-2 and integration of Israeli-made BVRAAM will be much smoother then integration of missiles from a different country. India also will be adding Indigenously developed Astra BVRAAM missile next on LCA Tejas next year onwards once it clears Pre-induction trails currently been carried out from IAF’s Sukhoi-30s.
