Racist? International outrage over Australian cartoon showing Indians eating solar panels

no it wont, its freedom of expression like Indians said many time before about muslim issues.

Of course it is freedom of expression. And some Indians criticizing it is also freedom of expression.

Some Indians murdering others because of a cartoon would be terrorism though and unjustified. Its amazing you can't see the obvious in your hurry to seek moral equivalency. There is none.

I don't get the stupidity its the west that wants us to cut down on coal and now that we are doing it they are butt hurt about it also. Damn if you do damn if you don't, or might just be coal lobby since they are getting a bit cut out after the current negotiations..

The cartoon by Bill Leak for The Australian
A cartoon in an Australian paper that shows starving Indians trying to eat solar panels has received widespread criticism and been termed 'racist'.

The cartoon comes in the backdrop of the climate deal signed in Paris where India, which is the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has also promised to curb carbon emissions.

The cartoon was drawn by cartoonist Bill Leak for The Australian, and immediately faced backlash on social media. People also took shots at him, claiming that a serious accident that he had after falling from a balcony a few years ago, has made him 'racist' ever since.

Speaking to The Guardian, Amanda Wise, an associate professor of sociology at Macquarie University said “This cartoon is unequivocally racist and draws on very base stereotypes of third world, underdeveloped people who don’t know what to do with technology. India is the technology centre of the world right now and has some of the most high-tech industries on the planet in that part of the world. The underlying message is that people in developing countries don’t need all these technologies to do with climate change – they need food."

“This only demonstrates the … provincial ignorance of both the journalist, cartoonist and publication...In truth, the bewildered farmers in Leak’s cartoon could probably teach him a thing or two about solar panels, while treating him to the indisputable pleasures of mango chutney,” Shoma Chaudhury, editor of Catch News told The Guardian.

A similiar incident had occured last year when The New York Times (NYT) published a racist cartoon showing India with a cow and knocking on the “Elite Space Club” soon after the country's successful mission to Mars. Indians, made sure that the publication got to see their wrath, with a steady influx of comments on social expressing their displeasure at the cartoon, and hordes of comments demanding an apology.

Here are some of the reactions that came in from Twitter on Bill Leak's cartoon.

Saddest thing is how racist lowlives like Bill Leak use "free speech" as defence, like they think they're doing powerful, subversive work.

LOL THIS MADE MY DAY!

Australia wants to sell India coal. India is ramping up local production and using solar for the rest. Hence the butthurt, they are getting cut out of the market.
Why would Australia be butthurt of India? Are you being sarcastic?

We can't cut ties with any country over such issues.

The only solution is thay we need to insult them back, and keep doing it time to time, exploit their faults in society, make them hate imigrants living there, create drift between them, create chaos. They attract brights minds who leave India to settle there.

They need to show these things to prove imigrants that look b!hces your country is a shyt hole and we are doing a favor to you by providing a heaven. They do that time to time and except a short time outrage nothing really happens later. They will do this kind of thing again in future too.

so you beieve killing non hindus for eating cows is Terrorism?

And ignore the trolls here, they will have their turn to be insulted too, like always.

For gods sake grow up. reacting to to tiny pinpricks as if its the worlds end is laughable from a country that aspires to be a world power. There is racism sexism castetism religious bigotry etc across the world and non more so than in India. To take offense at cartoons is childish and borne from deep insecurities. In life you ignore a single fly and dont go to DEFCON 5.
