Assembly is first step to manufacturingThis is a good step. It will increase the number of mobiles in our market, will make jobs in Pakistan and provide a skilled workforce in this industry.
The negative is that this is assembly not manufacture so there will be an increase in imports and i suspect the manufactured products will be for local market, not export. Regardless it is an excellent first step.
What we need now is to encourage those companies to manufacture some components locally and also to try and sell those products abroad as well as in Pakistan. Africa for example is an excellent market, so is Central Asia.
Hey you're mistaken... to manufacture mobiles you need a fully developed semi-conductor industry which is not that easy and will take a long time so it should be developed in parallel. Rest some parts can easily be manufactured locally with some investment in plastics and design centres. However if the locally assembled mobiles are cheaper then these can exported as well and we can find models manufactured / assembled in different countries. But the main and immediate advantage is the job creation. This is a good step. There are a lot of industries producing plastics in Pakistan..so it won't be a problem to make those parts. My of uncles owns a company that manufacturers plastics and precision components made from those high quality plastics.I never said it would be easy, but there are things we could do. Plastic casings for example, maybe the micro screws they use to house stuff, maybe the solder used could be Pakistani? Build it up bit by bit. Obviously it all depends on what is available locally.

Well, what I see is that the top management of GF is totally clueless and hence it is wise to sell any shares in it so, it is a good business decision by Abu Dhabi. However, what you're implying is not true. On the contrary, the semi-conductor industry is very important moving forward in future.Even Abu Dhabi with all its wealth is getting tired of Global Foundries; not that it had any fabrication in the UAE anyway.
