Several Islamic parties held demonstrations throughout the country on Friday protesting the continued violence against Muslims in India's capital Delhi.

The death toll from Delhi’s worst riots in decades rose to 42 till on Friday, as a political row broke out over the transfer of a judge who had criticised the police and the government’s handling of the crisis.

In Dhaka, a number of Islamic-minded parties brought out a procession to protest the invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary celebrations, scheduled to begin mid-March.

The procession went from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Naya Paltan office after Jummah prayers.

The processionists warned that if the government failed to withdraw the invitation, they would stage protests by clothing themselves in shrouds at the airport when Modi arrived in Dhaka.

The next program schedule for the protest would be announced after a meeting, said Nur Hossain Kasemi, vice-president of Hefajat-e-Islam.

Maulana Mamunul Haque, another Islamic party leader, said if Modi attended the birth centenary of Bangabandhu in March, it would be a dishonour to the Father of the Nation.

Criticising the statement of Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader that the troubles in Delhi were an internal matter of India, Islami Oikya Jote leader Moulana Abdul Karim demanded his resignation.

“BJP goons burnt and killed Muslim children and women inside their houses and a mosque after closing the doors. It has become too difficult for Muslims to stay in Delhi,” he said.

Terming Dhaka a city of mosques, he said: “If Modi arrives in Dhaka, it will be turned into a dirty place.”

Khelafat Andolon's Dhaka city Ameer Mawlana Mujibur Rahman Hamidi said Muslims would sacrifice their lives if required, in addition to showing black flags to Modi.

The protesters demanded that the Indian government stop the killing of Muslims. Otherwise, they warned, Muslims in Bangladesh would rise in protest against India.

They also burnt an effigy of Modi protesting the violence against Muslims committed by his government.

In Khulna, a rally convened by the district Imam Parishad, was held at Dak Bangla Mor protesting the razing of a mosque and homes, and the brutal killing of Muslims.

The protesters also demanded the cancellation of the invitation to the Indian prime minister.

Khulna Imam Samiti General Secretary Maulana Golam Kibria said: "The imams are preparing a prayer ceremony to pray for Bangabandhu, and the prime minister has invited a non-Muslim to the program. The invitation must be rescinded."

In Sreemangal, Anjumane Al Islah and Talamije Islamiah members held a rally against the violence perpetrated against Muslims in Delhi.

The speakers at the gathering said Muslims of the country would begin a mass movement if Modi was allowed to visit Bangladesh during the Mujib Year.

In Sylhet, numerous organizations held demonstrations condemning the brutalities being inflicted on Indian Muslims and demanded the cancellation of Modi's upcoming visit.

The angry protesters set fire to an effigy of Modi as well.

In Narsingdi, Tanzimul Madarisili Qawmia, Palash upazila Al Khidma Olama Parishad and Jamiate Olama Islam held rallies denouncing the Muslim killings in Delhi.

Speakers at the rallies said India preached secularism but prevented Muslims from performing religious rituals.

In Barisal, activists of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal brought out a procession with similar demands.

Speakers said Bangabandhu was praised throughout the world as a leader of peace and humanity. Modi is known as a communal leader and a riot maker, and his visit would damage the image of the program and might lead to communal instability in Bangladesh.

In Dinajpur, Imam-Olma Masaikh and Tauhidi Janata held a rally protesting the violence against Muslims.

Additional police were deployed during the protest.

In Netrokona, Khelafat Juba Andolon arranged a demonstration censuring the barbaric attack on Indian Muslims.

After the protest, which was joined by hundreds of Muslims, Modi's effigy was burned.

In Narayanganj, several Islamic-minded parties brought out separate protest processions in the town protesting the killing of Muslims in Delhi.
