Seems to me that the good ol' days of the 90s was the best time for both Japanese and Chinese romance ballads. One particular favorite Chinese (Cantonese) singer of mine during this period was Jacky Cheung , i don't know if many of you remember him? But i remember when I was going to Hong Kong on summer vacations, his songs would be playing all the time in the malls, or on the radio stations.

I just listened Eason Chan's song Long Time No See (久しぶり)or perhaps Coffee shop at the street corner.

I found that all the songs from Hong Kong are easy for anyone to sing.

Hong Kong back in the 70s, 80s and 90s was awesome for film and music. When the year 2000 came, it all went to shit.

No more bravado and soul, just a bunch of pretty boys who look more and more like girls.

Agree, Hong kong made some fabulous movies and entertainment during the old days. I used to be fond of their kung fu movies when i was a young boy back in the days. They really revolutionised Chinese entertaiment/culture worldwide. Strange that the mainland never had such a great movie industry/entertainment.

As for music, i have never listened to a chinese music(much less pop one.lol).

OMG i loveddddddddd the evil cult by jet li, drunken master by jackie chan, hard boil by chow yun fat(one of my best actors), , Enter the Dragon by bruce lee(one of my best movies), Master of the Flying Guillotine ,The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, the mission, once upon a tine in china by jet li , project A, one armed swordsman, fist of fury , the way of the dragon etc etc

Cantopop is dead. HK should really look for inspiration from the 70s and 80s to revive their dying entertainment industry. They had originality back than when they were making movies and songs with very low budget.
People are switching to Korean drama because they resemble some of the productions that HK used to make back in the day with a twist of modernity and higher budget.

TVB will go bankrupt if the government allow more competing players in the HK. they've been making crap for over 20 years.

The film was msinly set in hong kong. And lee was the main director/producer/writer. he was indeeed a legend

Agree, for example enter the dragon was made with a budget of just 800,000 dollars. But it was a great movie. In fact one of the greatest martial arts movies of all times. those were the golden days of hong kong chibese movies which dominated the world then.

Question is how come the motherland(mainland) hasnt been able to produce such great movies and create such a captivating entertainment industry ? I will think that giving its size it would have done better than even hong kong.

Hong Kong was the conduit , really, for myself and many other Japanese who are exposed to Chinese pop culture in the old days. I think what contributes is Cantonese language which is very soft sounding, its not rough sounding at all , very happy sounding language. Pronunciations are fairly easy , for me that is.

Anyways, some really good HK based singers; these guys are like popular not just in China, but also in Korea, Japan and I think in SEA Chinese communities:
