Hon Sir,

Petroleum Institute of Pakistan organized a Seminar on " Shale gas potential & challenges in Pakistan" on Feb 23, 2013 at Dr Ziauddun University Karachi. Since I have keen interest in Pakistan’s hydrocarbon potential; a kind friend who attended the seminar briefed me on the papers presented by the leaders of Pakistan Petroleum Industry in this forum. Figure mentioned By Dr Asim Hussain for total county reserves of tight & shale gas at 51 TCF for which he referred to the data with the US Energy Information Administration.

Do you have more reliable information than the Oil Minister & Petroleum Institute of Pakistan? Would greatly appreciate your basis for the figure of 214 TCF shale gas reserves?

Is it shale gas or tight gas? These are two different types though the method of extraction is generally the same. The former is from shale rock and the latter is extracted from non-porous sandstone or limestone.

You are correct. There is a difference.

Shale gas is trapped in the sedimentary rock, a bit similar to tiny air pockets in a loaf of bread. Tight gas on the other hand is dispersed within very low permeability silt or sand that creates a tight environment from which gas cannot escape easily.

However, since extraction of both these natural gases is thru horizontal drilling & fracking; even though technically incorrect, many do not differentiate between these two types of unconventional reservoirs when referring to shale or tight gas.
