Lack of Ukrainian components stalls construction of ships for Russian Navy

Russia cannot complete the construction of some naval ships as Ukraine has suspended supplies of gas-turbine engines, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Wednesday.

"We cannot finish the construction of surface ships for the Russian Navy as supplies [of gas-turbine engines] have been stopped," Rogozin said in the Siberian city of Omsk.

He said within the import substitution plan, Russia plans to launch the production on 186 items that were earlier produced in Ukraine, first of all gas-turbine engines.

"We are planning to complete this [import substitution] work before 2018," the top official noted.

Admiral Grigorovich class frigates (Project 11356) and Admiral Gorshkov class frigates (Project 22350) use Ukrainian gas-turbine engines, in particular.

Ukraine in May terminated a treaty on military cooperation with Russia.

An explanatory note said the bill was aimed at "protecting Ukraine’s national interests, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The authors of the document claim that the Russian side "has unilaterally violated norms and principles of the international law and carried out armed aggression against Ukraine."

NPO "Saturn" will start local production of gas turbines for ships in 2017.
They already producing gas turbine power plants and technology is similar.

So , that also affect 22350s

Propulsion: CODAG with 2 shafts;
two М90ФР gas turbines 27,500 shp (20,500 kW);
two 10Д49 marine diesel engines 5,200 shp (3,900 kW);
Total: 65,000 shp (48,000 kW)

The power plant of the Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates includes two М90ФР gas turbines and two 10Д49 marine diesel engines.
The М90ФР gas turbines are built in Ukraine, but because of Russia's annexation of Crimea and the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine, Kiev is not allowing the Ukrainian manufacturer of the gas turbines to deliver the two engines to the Severnaya Verf shipyard, even though the money has already been paid.
As an alternative the Kolomensky engine plant, a Russian based firm that manufactures engines, is working at the moment with Russian aircraft engine firm Saturn to build a domestic replacement.

It doesn't, because third frigate planned to be launched after 2018.
It does, because of a) the particular type of turbine used in the ship and b) the assumption it will all come together in time. We'll have to wait and see.

Agree with Penguin that we have to wait and see but if such top officials as Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin recognize it a great problem it means a lot. Nowadays Russian defence industry should create a miracle to replace all ukrainian components in time. When I say this I also mean that it is hardly possible for them to buy any components or advanced equipment abroad because of sanctions.

Only for frigate of project 11356 and this "problem" will be solved in 2017.

So journalist are retards, nothing new.

The lead vessel Admiral Gorshkov and second-in-class Admiral Kasatonov are powered by two M90FR gas turbines designed and built by Zorya-Mashproekt in Ukraine. Russia's NPO Saturn collaborated extensively with the Ukrainian turbine maker before the ban and will now build the M90FR.
However, the status of power plants for Admiral Golovko and Admiral Isakov is unclear, and the timetable for completing these ships may be extended. Under the Russian government's import substitution programme, it is understood that NPO Saturn is supposed to develop the capability to produce and test the M90FR by 2017.

Remains to be seen how that works out.

Let us wait and see))) Only two years left for 2017.

LOLs no one wants crappy Ukrainian turbines. They are 40 years old.
