A suspect whose DNA matches with samples taken from the body of six-year-old Zainab Amin, who was raped and murdered in Kasur earlier this month, has been arrested, DawnNews reported on Tuesday citing police sources.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, while speaking to DawnNews, neither confirmed nor denied the reports. He said the Punjab government would brief the media on the matter itself.

The suspect is a resident of the same area and lives very close to the aunt's house, the sources said.

Zainab had left her house in Kasur's Road Kot area for her maternal aunt's house a few minutes away for religious lessons on January 4.

The victim's body was recovered from a trash heap on Jan 9. An autopsy confirmed that she was strangled to death. It suggested that she had been raped before being killed.

The suspect's appearance matches the appearance of an individual seen with Zainab in CCTV footage recovered by police, according to police sources.

He was arrested as part of the investigation earlier but was let go, the sources said, adding that he was arrested again after more evidence was collected.

His name has been sent to Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, the sources said.

LAHORE: A suspect named Imran has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of eight-year-old Zainab in Kasur, police officials confirm on Tuesday.

According to Express News, police officials claim that he has confessed to the crime. Initial reports revealed that he was Zainab’s neighbour.

He had previously been arrested in the case but was released.

SC gives 72-hour deadline to nab Zainab’s killers

The Supreme Court on Sunday gave a 72-hour deadline to Punjab police chief to arrest suspects involved in the rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab and at least eight other children of Kasur district.

A special three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, resumed hearing of suo motu notice of the brutal murder at its Lahore Registry on Sunday.

Zainab was kidnapped on January 4 from near her aunt’s house in Kasur. Her body was discovered five days later from a garbage heap. The post-mortem report revealed that she had been raped and murdered.

For all the press conference loving psychos we have. I want any one of them to come out and share the details.

These 2nd hand accounts and reports are not doing any favor except the incompetent authorities and the criminals.

KASUR: Police have made a major breakthrough in a case pertaining to the grisly rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur by arresting the main suspect, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

According to informed sources, the tissue samples obtained from a suspect had matched the samples taken from the body of the victim.

Reports say the suspect named Imran is a resident of the same area and lived in close proximity to the house of Zainab’s aunt.

Police claim the suspect has confessed to the crime. He was initially arrested when the murder came to the light, but later was released.

Reports say the culprit disappeared from the neighbourhood shortly after his release. Police then traced and rounded him up again after some clues.

The 72-hour deadline

On January 21, the Supreme Court gave three days’ time to a joint investigation team formed to probe the rape and murder of Zainab to track down the culprit.

Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan Muhammad Idrees, who is heading a joint investigation team constituted to probe the incident, submitted a progress report to the court.

Details of Zainab’s killer released by the police

He informed that Zainab’s rape and murder was the eighth incident of similar nature that had taken place in Kasur since June 2015.

Several similar incidents had taken place in the same city, what police had done so far to arrest culprits, the chief justice asked.

Expressing dissatisfaction over progress in the probe into the rape-murder of the minor girl, a member of the bench remarked the investigators had zeroed in on just one angle of the case. The police could probe the case in multiple traditional ways, he added.

Justice Manzoor Ahmed Malik asked the police to focus on other angles of the case too, reminding them that the DNA testing was not the only way to trace the culprit.

If the police continued the probe in this way, DNA tests of 210 million people will have to be conducted, he said.

The case background

Zainab was abducted on January 04 from Kasur’s Kot Road area. Five days after her disappearance, she was found raped, dead and buried in a garbage dump on Jan 09.

Zainab’s rape and murder shattered the entire nation, triggering widespread public outrage with people from all walks of life demanding an exemplary capital punishment for the perpetrator.

Violent protests had erupted in the Kasur city following the incident, resulting in the death of two people in police firing outside DC office.

The incident blew the lid on the horrifying reality of how children in a brutalized society are vulnerable to sexual abuse.

NEWS DESK: Police investigating the rape and murder case of the seven-year-old child who was found dead in a trash heap in Kasur have claimed that the child’s neighbour has confessed to have raped and killed her.

According to the police, the suspect has been identified as Imran Arshad. Police said he confessed to the crime during interrogation. Police said the suspect, who is said to be 24 years old, was familiar with Zainab’s family and would also frequent the minor girl’s house.

The suspect has claimed that he and his father were under the influence of jinns (supernatural spirits). However, the police have said that the suspect was in a mentally stable condition.

On Sunday, a special bench of the Supreme Court heard the rape and murder cases of Zainab and at least eight other children at the registry in Lahore on Sunday. The three-judge bench was headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar who presided over the hearing of the suo motu notice.

During the hearing, the Joint-Investigation Team (JIT) led by RPO Multan Muhammad Idrees presented a report detailing inquiry into the rape and murder cases of the Kasur children. The JIT found it to be eighth such incident within the jurisdiction of three police stations involving the same suspect as per DNA match in Kasur since 2015.

Nevertheless, the Punjab Forensic Laboratory sought more time to reach any conclusion. The court gave them another deadline of three days.

The bench had reprimanded the Kasur police for failing to take notice of crime when it was first reported in 2015. “If the police had taken first case that surfaced in 2015 seriously, eight young girls would not have been raped and murdered.”

JIT members including Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Saeed, Director-General Punjab Forensic Science Agency Dr Muhammad Ashraf Tahir appeared before the court. Parents of Zainab and other eight victims were also present in the courtroom and demanded justice.
