ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan could well be one of the leading dignitaries watching the Winter Olympics, which start in Beijing on February 4.

‘The News’ has learnt from well-placed sources, the government of China and China Sports Authority were keenly looking forward to Pakistan Prime Minister’s presence, in the opening or the closing ceremony, or during the event.

When ‘The News’ asked a Pakistan Sports Board (PCB) official whether the Board had received any such invitation, he confirmed receiving one. “Yes, we are in contact with the Chinese authorities and have received a communication. We have forwarded that to the foreign ministry through the official channel,” he said.

Pakistan Prime Minister’s presence would be of great significance as some major western countries have decided on the diplomatic boycott of the mega event. Though athletes from around the world will travel to compete in the four-yearly event, no dignitaries from these western countries are expected to watch the Games.

Khalid Mansoor, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a couple of days back revealed Prime Minister’s plan to visit China early next month. It is likely that during his visit, the PM would also witness Winter Olympics.
It is not clear yet whether the Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC) Dr Fahmida Mirza, who is in the USA for the last two weeks and is expected to return within the next couple of days, will go to China. “Once she returns we will be in a position to say anything on that,” the official said.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan and China have always stood by each other in thick and thin, and the upcoming visit of PM Khan to China will open new avenues to strengthen exemplary relations between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said Pakistan and China have always stood by each other in difficult times.

In a statement on Thursday about the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan to Beijing, he said we have exemplary relations with China and nobody can deny the significance of this relationship.

The Foreign Minister pointed out that a special task force was constituted to take forward the CPEC and other joint projects with China. He said the task force chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan held several round of discussions and now a strategy has been prepared on the basis of which talks will be held with the Chinese leadership.

The Foreign Minister said the main aim of the Prime Minister’s visit is to attend Beijing’s Winter Olympics and expressed solidarity with China as some countries have boycotted the event.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, however, said Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet the Chinese President and the Premier on the sidelines of the Winter Olympics.

He said our foreign policy is focused on economic diplomacy to achieve economic stability and bring prosperity in the lives of the people.

Why did Pakistan not join RCEP deal then?
Because Pakistan has better treatment. China unilaterally granted Pakistan zero tariff treatment.
Chinese goods entering Pakistan need to pay taxes. Pakistani goods entering China are duty-free.
He should push for same tariffs and market access as China gives to ASEAN if not better.

Then why are Pakistani posters asking for more access to Chinese market. As per you, China has already given maximum access.

He is explaining how they're incorrect
You don't have to be so slow and show your indianess everywhere...
So are you saying that Pakistan is already at its maximum export potential with China. Now only Chinese imports to Pakistan can increase. So more trade imbalance.

Because many countries get zero tariff treatment, not only Pakistani. China and many countries have free trade agreements, Pakistani goods still need to face fierce competition. "Asking for more access to Chinese market" is a requirement for Pakistani goods, not for China.

Pakistan zero tariff treatment.

The tariff for Pakistani goods entering China is zero, and the tariff for Chinese goods entering Pakistan is 5% - 35%.

There may be certain non-tariff barriers, regulatory checks etc where Pakistan might be wanting easier access.

China can't do more. Pakistani goods are actually super VIPs in the Chinese market.
Let me talk about China's special preferential treatment to Pakistan:
1, China unilaterally gives Pakistan 0 tariff treatment. When Pakistani goods enter China, the tariff is 0. When Chinese goods enter Pakistan, the tariff is 5-35%. In 2020, China's total consumption was 39.2 trillion CNY, six times that of India. This means that enterprises investing in Pakistan can have a market six times larger than India. This has greatly enhanced Pakistan's attractiveness to foreign investment.http://fta.mofcom.gov.cn/topic/enpakistan.shtml
2, In order to keep Pakistan's economy stable, China agreed to exchange 20 billion yuan currency with Pakistan at a fixed exchange rate (20 billion yuan for 351 billion PKR) every year. This means that Pakistan can obtain 20 billion CNY foreign exchange every year without being affected by currency depreciation (CNY is a currency with stable appreciation). It could also warn international hedge funds not to target Pakistan. https://m.economictimes.com/news/in...p-deal-with-pakistan/articleshow/64305181.cms

1. If someone wants to access Chinese market, they will invest in China. The only reason to invest in Pakistan would be if cost of production was less in Pakistan vis-a-vis China. I dont think that is the case though.

2. Exchange of currency with Yuan will only help in Chinese imports. This Yuan will not help Pakistan in trade with other nations or bolstering in forex reserves. Correct me if I am wrong.
