President urges people to make Pakistan modern
* Congratulates Sindh and Karachi governments on success of Hamara Karachi festival
ISLAMABAD: President General Pervez Musharraf has urged Pakistanis to shun despondency and make their country a modern, progressive and enlightened welfare state.
ââ¬ÅLet us not be swayed by the hostile propaganda and introvert tendencies and fall victim to the scourge of sectarianism, parochialism and tribal, regional or provincial prejudices,ââ¬Â he said in statement on the Hamara Karachi festival.
ââ¬ÅWe have to make Pakistan a truly developed country comparable to any other developed country of the world,ââ¬Â he said. ââ¬ÅI am confident that we can do it. We have the will, the courage, the vision and the potential to make Pakistan a strong, progressive and forward-looking state as envisioned by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the father of the nation.ââ¬Â
ââ¬ÅIt gives me immense pleasure to know that the Hamara Karachi festival attracted tremendous response: not only from all towns of Karachi, its suburbs and other cities of Pakistan, but also from the foreign missions, NGOs, multinational companies and private sector organisations,ââ¬Â the president said. ââ¬ÅI am glad to know that diplomats and guests from abroad also participated in the festival.ââ¬Â
He congratulated Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad, Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Karachi Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal and Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil, saying the activities arranged by the provincial and district governments ââ¬Åreflected the diversity, richness and vast potential of Pakistani festivities, traditions and cultureââ¬Â.
He said the events in the festival, including concerts, film festivals, plays, painting exhibitions, food streets, cricket matches, the womenââ¬â¢s convention, the youth festival, quiz competitions, visits to historical buildings, Abdullah Shah Ghaziââ¬â¢s anniversary and the mushaira, were ââ¬Åa true manifestation of the treasures of our history, art and cultureââ¬Â.
Organising such events ââ¬Åis a commendable activity to supplement the efforts of the government to portray to the world a true and positive image of Pakistan - not the one depicted by the foreign mediaââ¬Â, President Musharraf said.
ââ¬ÅI take this opportunity to felicitate all those who contributed to make the festival a success,ââ¬Â he said.
