The president, Zillur Rahman, has attached importance to halting brain drain from the country so that fruits of science and information technology would reach the countrys hardworking and resilient common people.
Our students go to Europe and America for higher studies, he said adding but it is a matter of regret many of them didnt return after completing higher education abroad which may make the country void of merit.
The president told tenth convocation of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology on Thursday.
The president urged the new graduates for creating proper working environment in the country and try to make it sustainable. Its you who have to explore alternative source of energy, invent environment- friendly technology and build technology-based society, the president added.
Countrys common and simple people are looking at you, your cooperation can change their standard of living, he said while presiding over the convocation of the countrys leading engineering institute.
The president said new engineers would have to take lead in implementing the government declared digital Bangladesh. The information technology would have to reach up to remote places, he added.
Zillur Rahman also urged the engineers, who are working abroad, to provide services to people of their motherland side-by-side working in foreign land.
During the convocation nearly 3,500 students of six academic years from 2002-03 to 2007-08 were conferred graduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees from various disciplines of engineering.
Farhana Ashraf of academic year of 2003-04, Asif Islam Khan of 2004-05, Sania Rahman of 2005-06, Suporno Barua of 2006-07 and Rashid Islam of 2007- 08 received University Gold Medals from the president for scoring highest marks in their respective years.
Besides, Abdullah Adnan for 2009, M Al Amin Khan Choiwdhury for 2008, AKM Bashirul for 2007 and Fahmida Ferdous for 2006 received Rashid Gold Medals.
Former chief adviser to the caretaker government Justice Habibur Rahman gave the convocation speech while education minister Nurul Islam Nahid spoke as the special guest. BUET vice-chancellor professor SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-vice-chancellor professor Mohammad Habibur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
Congratulating the new graduates, the president expressed his hope that they would put in their all-out efforts using talent and creativity to implement the government-declared Vision 2021 to build an information technology-based prosperous Bangladesh.
Saying the state and the society would ensure employments for the new graduates as per their capacity, the president suggested some of the graduates could create self-employment motivated by many stories of successful Bangladeshi entrepreneurs.
The president agreed with BUET vice-chancellors demand of expanding research activities and digital programme as well as building a female hostel at the university. The demands are very logical, he added.
The president urged the ministries concerned and organisations to solve the problems giving top priority.
He said engineering education of BUET was well known in international arena. This esteemed institution has already produced over 25,000 engineers, architectures and planners in the country, he added.
