General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., the privately held maker of Predator drones, said it has won U.S. approval for an export version of the unmanned plane that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are interested in buying.

“There’s interest from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates,” Frank Pace, president of the Poway, California-based company, said in an interview at the Farnborough Air Show near London today. The U.S. recently approved the company’s request for an unarmed version of the Predator drone for export to countries beyond the NATO block, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, Pace said.

The company may sell as many as 100 of the so-called Predator XP models that is approved for export, Pace said. General Atomics has sold about 435 Predator series of drones. The average price of the plane ranges from about $4 million for the basic model to about $15 million for the latest Avenger version, according to spokeswoman Kimberly Kasitz.

“Saudi Arabia is a huge country and if they want to cover the country well they alone could get 50 aircraft,” Pace said.

The export version of the Predator, based on the model used by the U.S. Army and the Air Force, will lack the ability to carry weapons and will be designed only for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, Pace said.

General Atomics also builds the Predator B model with extended range and a newly launched Predator C or Avenger version that can evade enemy radar. Boeing Co., Northrop Grumman Corp., and Lockheed Martin Corp., also make unmanned air vehicles used by the U.S. military for surveillance and armed missions.

Its unarmed so will not make much of a difference for us as turkish UAV is already there and Pakistan would be more likely interested in buying a turkish UAV with no strings attached rather then buying an american one with God knows how many strings attached.

You know...when PAF was seeking F-16 in the 1980s, the U.S. offered the F-20 and later the export-centric F-16-79...but ultimately allowed the sale of F-16 Block-15 to PAF.

Is it me or is this whole Predator armed-UAV (AUAV) business beginning to sound the same? First U.S. offered the RQ-7 to Pakistan, and has now moved up to the Predator XP...as alternative AUAVs inch closer (Burraq & Anka-B), the U.S. might finally let up on the armed Predator.

Reporting from Kandahar, Afghanistan — The U.S. military often portrays its drone aircraft as high-tech marvels that can be operated seamlessly from thousands of miles away. But Pentagon accident reports reveal that the pilotless aircraft suffer from frequent system failures, computer glitches and human error.

Design and system problems were never fully addressed in the haste to push the fragile plane into combat over Afghanistan shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks more than eight years ago. Air Force investigators continue to cite pilot mistakes, coordination snafus, software failures, outdated technology and inadequate flight manuals.

piloting errors are nothing big, US should let their pilots play flight simulator for one more year.

Something is brewing else there would not have been any news especially in reputable newspaper Bloomberg. General Atomics must be close to developing export model Predator drone.

Well with out missiles I don't see much use for preditors

May be the optical sensors and video capture would be good addition but I am sure china has better quality

The name predetor should be changed to 'Peeping Tom' you can't look but can't touch we already have this technology

Atleast Predators are better than the RQ-7 Shadows so if we get Predators instead of 12 Shadows it will be good deal.;)

While we can have indigenious, Turkish and Italian design with no string attached an insight look into predator is still worth as a pinnacle of drone warfare. Usually the non-nato export variants have different radar codes, reduced encryption and perhap non-nato weapon system compatibility.

Does someone realize the potential of drone war fare in future. I think the real killer would be jet power self piloted super sonic drones in the range of mach 2 - 2.5. US must have realized that sooner of later a bunch of private companies outside USA will have drones on sale with matching capabilities driving out potential US market share. SO why not offer it on sale before anyone else does. Also US has the entire production line ready while others are about to start serial production.

My sixth sense says all this terrorism hoopla is american creation to boost its dying exports of defence sector beyond the traditional product.

Well that is exactly how its military machine and banks and wallstreet corporations work.

Create an imaginary enemy, make it into somewhat of a realistic one, give more defence contracts to defence companies, fill that purpose get new toys, bomb the **** out of the so called enemy, yeah the one who wants to take away America's freedom from their folks bla bla bla, and then rebuild it giving reconstruction contracts again to their bedfellows from wallstreet. Hand out loans to the bombed out country to further enslave it and in the mean time sell your combat proven weapons to the world.

To think about it, its quite brilliant and it works.
