LONDON: A top federal minister of the cabinet of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who was quite recently the target of frequent lethal attacks in the National Assembly (NA) in its last session on account of his alleged wheeling and dealing, is said to have purchased a multi million pound six bedroom luxury flat in the heart of London.

Many Pakistani politicians do own flats in the Central London, including Rehman Malik and others. Gen (retd) Musharraf recently purchased a multi-million pound flat in the locality where he is living alone these days. Now, this PPP minister is the last, not the least, addition to the list of a privileged class of politicians who own house or flat in London. Nawaz Sharif too owns a residential building at the Park Lane, facing the Hyde Park.

The huge house located adjacent to the Marble Arch area of London, has been purchased at a total cost of £4.3 million and the money was said to be transferred through a money exchange dealer based in F-10 Markaz. The money dealer whose name starts with “I” is said to have sent this huge money through illegal channels. The minister is said to have paid cash to buy this property instead of seeking any mortgage from some local bank, as it is usually done in Great Britain. Sources said that no mortgage was sought and the amount was paid in cash only to hide the identity of the minister who was buying the flat.

The political sources in London claimed that the money was sent in instalments through Hundi business, therefore the transfer of this money was not traced by the concerned agencies. The sources claimed that the minister could also face the serious charges of “money laundering” as he had sent the money in huge amounts through illegal channels instead of using the normal banking channels.

The sources said the minister, who is a member of PPP Central Executive Committee, had been visiting London quite frequently when Benazir Bhutto used to summon the meetings of his party men in 2007. The minister who used to live with some of the party people in London at their flats, was searching for a small flat since 2007 but his limited financial resources did not allow him to buy a flat there. The minister had also visited many places of London to find out a flat along with his political friends. The sources said the minister was always interested in buying a flat in London and he always talked with his friends how to buy a flat. His lifetime desire was fulfilled when he became a minister in the PPP government and he started minting money.

He was the only minister in the PPP government, whose stories of corruption had started making rounds in Islamabad. He even came under fire in the national media and the NA, but he always denied these reports and even vowed on Quran to establish his innocence. But, no one believed in his vows, which are very common in Pakistan to deceive the gullible general public.

The minister, who belongs to the suburbs of Islamabad, was so infamous in taking bribe and commissions in the deals that at one stage his name was at the top of those ministers who were set to be replaced and given some other insignificant ministry. However, Prime Minister Gilani, despite several vows to change this minister, never found a chance to reshuffle his cabinet.

Corruption claims in rental power deals rock NA

* Power minister, PML-Q leader engage in verbal clash
* Opp criticises govt for not tabling report on Gojra riots
* Malik says report would be completed in three weeks

By Zulfiqar Ghuman

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) demand for a parliamentary commission to investigate reports of alleged corruption in deals with rental power stations triggered a verbal clash between Power Minister Power Raja Pervez Ashraf and PML-Q Parliamentary Leader Faisal Saleh Hayat in the National Assembly on Friday.

But before the situation deteriorated, Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi prorogued the session sine die amid criticism by opposition members who wanted to speak, but were disallowed despite repeated promises by the deputy speaker.

Enraged by the demand for an investigation by a parliamentary commission, Ashraf accused Faisal of quoting wrong figures in the NA, and challenged him to prove his allegations or resign.

Faisal accepted the challenge, and said that he would resign from his NA seat if he could not prove his points before a parliamentary commission. He wanted to respond to Ashraf’s claims, the but deputy speaker did not give him time although he had promised Faisal would be allowed to speak after Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

Earlier, on a point of order, Faisal welcomed an offer by federal Minister for Labour and Manpower Khurshid Shah for parliamentary investigation into the reported allegations of corruption in his ministry, and demanded that the same offer be made by the minister for water and power.

“The rental power stations will be formalised at a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee today, which will be unfair to the people of Pakistan in the absence of a proper investigation. My party also tabled an adjournment motion in accordance with the prime minister’s desire, but the government did not act on it,” said Faisal.

He also criticised the government for not tabling a report on the Gojra riots despite a unanimous National Assembly resolution. “The government talks of empowering parliament, but always ignores its resolutions,” he said. The PML-Q parliamentary leader said the government praised the Supreme Court’s decision on the 2007 emergency, but ignored its directive to decide the fate of about 37 ordinances in parliament.

“The PML-Nawaz always talks of a trial for [former president Pervez] Musharraf under Article 6, but if it is really serious, why is a resolution not passed in the Punjab Assembly?” he said.

Ashraf said; “Yes ... power rentals are being installed. Otherwise, we’ll have to face load shedding for 30 years. I am answerable to the people, parliament, the prime minister and, above all, to God. I have done all in good faith and in a transparent manner.”

He said that he was not afraid of any investigation by any commission. “But at the same time, I will say if the MNA from Jhang fails to prove his claims, he should resign from the NA and go home to Jhang,” he said.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the NA that Maulana Ali Sher Haideri was killed in a dispute over a plot of land. About the Gojra riots, the minister said a judicial commission had recorded statements by 300 Christian and 700 Muslim witnesses. “The report is likely to be completed in three weeks ... it will be tabled in the House,” he added.

Dictators have no clean hands either... let democracy work.
It will smooth out in time.

One has to be a stupid to prefer thermal power plants over hydal energy.
Pakistan's first ever power policy was formed by previous govt. but no where it is written about any thermal power or rental thermal power!
Thermal power is basically will used to produce electricity or coal.. in both ways it is stupid to shelve Kalabagh dam and ignore the state's power policy and take stupid decisions without consulting engineers...
I have even seen the ministery building the case for rental power, even Holl brook is urging to rent thermal power plant on urgent basis?
Now who is going to object the interference of western leaders in Pakistan's internal affairs! friendly opposition?

Unclean hands of dictator does not justify that next govt. is also imune ot corruption.
'Smooth out' means it is allowed ot handover state to known criminals?
Your democracy is only busy indebting the future generations of Pakistan!
I do not agree we have democracy where people are being hired on govts. pay roll without merit and justification.
This no democracy where govt. is working to appoint no-deserving envoys, while firing or ignoring the deserving candidates.
There is no democracy where currency is being devalued and taxes are being imposed upon the dictation of foreignors.

i have seen pictures of his house. will post pictures after i get them from my friend
