KARACHI: An explosion near Essa Nagri in Karachi on Saturday evening targeted Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan’s convoy, Express News reported.
The blast destroyed a black squad car bearing a government number plate. The car was part of Khan’s entourage. A rickshaw and some motorcycles were also destroyed.
The blast injured as many as five people, including the commissioner and his guard. He has been rushed to the Liaquat National Hospital where his situation is described as ‘stable’.
Matanat Ali Khan’s guard died at the hospital during treatment.
The injured have been shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Express News correspondent Nadeem Khan said that explosives had been hidden in a motorcycle parked near the road in front of the mosque and was detonated using remote control.
The explosion took place near a graveyard and mosque located next to Essa Nagri and near Civic Centre, the nerve centre of Karachi’s civic administration.
The sprawling exhibition hall, Expo centre is also located in the same area.
The explosion was loud enough to be heard for miles away, and a smoke cloud could be seen rising from the site.
One man tweeted that as a result of the explosion, one side of the Sir Shah Mohammad Suleman Road, the main artery that criss crosses University road, had been closed. As a result, the traffic on the road is currently jammed.
