Three dead in Pakistan police station attack

PESHAWAR: At least three policemen were killed Saturday when a group of militants attacked their station in a northwestern Pakistani town bordering a tribal area, police said.

The attack on Kolachi police station, close to the border with South Waziristan tribal district, also left seven injured, while gunfire was continuing at the site, district police chief Mohammad Hussain Khan told AFP.

“A group of militants fired at Kolachi police station and then lobbed hand grenades inside. As a result, three policemen were martyred and seven others were wounded,” he said.

There were 17 policemen on duty at the time, he said, adding that security forces had been called in and the area cordoned off.

Khan said that since the police station was close to the lawless tribal belt, it was most likely that the attackers had come from there.

Nearly 4,500 people have been killed across Pakistan in attacks blamed on Taliban and other Islamist extremist networks based in the tribal belt since government troops stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad in 2007.

Burqa-clad militants kill 7 police in Pakistan siege

PESHAWAR: At least seven policemen were killed Saturday when militants in suicide vests, some of them clad in burqas, laid siege to a police station in northwest Pakistan, police said.

Up to eight militants attacked Kolachi police station near the border with South Waziristan tribal district, using guns and hand grenades to take a group of policemen hostage in an attack that also left five militants dead and seven more police wounded.

“Seven of our policemen were martyred in the attack,” regional police chief Imtiaz Shah told AFP.

Shah said the siege began when attackers dressed in women’s burqas took out guns at the station’s main gate and killed policemen deployed there.

The militants then damaged the boundary wall with hand grenades, enabling more rebels to follow them into the building.

About 17 policemen were on duty at the time and were taken hostage by the militants once they ran out of ammunition, the police chief said.

As security forces were called to the scene and cordoned off the police station, two of the attackers detonated their suicide vests, while three others were shot dead by security forces, Shah said.

“About two to three attackers are left now, and security forces are trading fire with them as they have left the police station building,” Shah said.

Earlier, district police chief Mohammad Hussain Khan told AFP that seven policemen were also wounded in the attack.

Khan said that since the police station was close to the lawless tribal belt, it was likely that the attackers had come from there. A security official confirmed the attack and casualties.

Television footage showed thick black smoke billowing from the roof of the fortress-like police station and security forces and police firing at militants.

Nearly 4,500 people have been killed across Pakistan in attacks blamed on Taliban and other extremist networks based in the tribal belt since government troops stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad in 2007.

Police regain Kolachi police station; 12 cops killed

Police have regained control of Kolachi police station after hours-long shootout with terrorists.

Twelve policemen, including an SHO, were killed in the terrorist attack on the police station in DI Khan.

The police station was taken over by a group of terrorists holding positions on the rooftop of the police station. The Army and other security forces rounded up the police station and were engaged in a shootout with the terrorists holed up inside.

The terrorists, one of them wearing full veil or burqa, entered the police station, and gun shots were heard soon after. They locked the police station from the inside and took positions on the rooftop.

The number of the terrorists holding up inside is not immediate clear. However, unconfirmed reports put their number between 7 and 20.

The takeover of the police station by militants sparked an hours-long standoff. At least two of the intruders reportedly blew themselves up in two suicide bombings.

Three explosions rocked the police station building in quick succession, setting off plumes of smoke into the sky.

At least two dozen police officers had been inside the building when the militants stormed it; two wounded officers had managed to get out.

Between seven and 20 attackers, some wearing suicide vests and others armed with grenades and guns were involved, according to local officials.

A police official said the first blast was caused by a suicide bomber who blew himself up when an armored vehicle tried to enter the compound.

At least one of the other two explosions also was caused by a suicide bomber, said regional police chief Imtiaz Shah. He said at least 10 police officers had been killed, while five others were wounded.

The Taliban meanwhile claimed reponsibility for the police station rain.

Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan in a telephone call to AFP claimed responsibility, saying it was the latest in a series of attacks to avenge the killing of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

“We sent one male and one female suicide bomber to participate in the attack, because we want to liberate our people from the slavery of America,” Ehsan said.

Nearly 4,500 people have been killed across Pakistan in attacks blamed on Taliban and other extremist networks based in the tribal belt since government troops stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad in 2007.

They are trying to liberate your country from slavery of America. You should support them.

Nowadays there seems to be a change in tactic. They are not attacking civilians and going only for Army/FC/Police.
