If we are getting the OHP's for next to nothing and they have not gone through any extended period of war patrols than they must have a life of another fifteen years in PN service ( remember we are not a “Blue Ocean” navy and do not require Atlantic or Pacific operations which require longer duration patrols). Once the onboard power plant, bulkheads, piping/pumps goes through a major overhaul (They even remove the whole superstructure and take out entire power plant and replace weakened beams and members/plates) the platform is as good as new.

Excellent analysis Aamir! I would like to add that the OHP's can be used for rotational duties in peace time and also for training purposes.

We also need to keep in mind that we can use them for our relatively peaceful naval border with Iran and the Gulf.

One question - Is the US paying for the upgrades from Pakistan's military aid?

Hi,

I think most of the posters are selling the OHP's very short. Look---on one hand we are taking in 30 years old F 16 and on the other hand we have this problem with OHP.

The naval ships life is judged on a different basis unlike those vehicles of the dry land. The surface ships life is different than that of submersibles. The OHP is a very fine platform for what we can abosrb and afford. The american weaponery and operating systems are exremely cost effective and efficient and 78 mil per ship will ghive us a good bang for the buck.

As one of our posters put it, time is of essence---we get this ship before the end of the year and 5 more to follow. We have to fill in our gaps as soon as possible. We are getting 6 frigates for only and only $ 480 mil---that is chicken feed for weapons procurement.

Another asset we will have is that 6 ships will have an extra crew of roughly 300 per ship ie---150 to 200 active on ship and the rest in training or leave---plus the support staff---which means that in all we may have another 2500 to 4000 naval staff ready and prepared to go to battle in the next 3 to 4 years.

Some of the staff trained on these vessels will be transffered over to any newer vessels that pak navy may purchase. We need to understand that absorbing technology is a stair step kind of concept---for a newbie, it is easier to get acclamitized to an OHP rather than a brand new system----and a trained personale from an OHP can make the jump to the next level up much easier.

Overall---a great deal for the pak navy.

Thanks for your comments. As far as I know, it is being paid out of capacity building fund. I can be wrong. I will update as soon a I have a sound confirmation

These are 3 decade old frigates, so for US its cost is long gone as they have used them to their maximum and utilized them too.

Personally, i don;t favor such deal nor its acquiring.

Yeah they must be US technology, but they are 30 year old frigates, God knows how much would be the operational cost of these frigates and again what will happen if we get sanctioned once again, like old times, major PN firepower would be lost all at once.

Turkey and Australia are OHP operators who took the delivery roughly a decades ago and now updating them to last beyond 2020. Their armaments radar and sonar will be updated to today's standard and same is the case for Pakistan.
Sm-2 are one of the deadliest air defense missile in the world. In addition to 32 SM-2 8 Harpoon block II, 8 ASROC AUG-139, and 6 Torpedoes will be reequipped for Pakistan navy.

PN has requested for 6 OHP with upgrades and one frigate per 6-12 months after the first delivery.

This will be the best naval ship in Pakistan's fleet and everyone is crying about it. i fail to understand why most of the guys wont understand that a ship of 78million and the best ship in PN fleet is a great offer.

i am clueless as to why people wont get it....
