The impact of induction of the P3C Orion Aircraft on the Indian Navy’s Preparedness: An Assessment
by Commodore RS Vasan IN (Retd)
1. A lot of debate is taking place in the naval circles and amongst maritime analysts to understand the full impact of the induction of the P3C Orion in the sub continent. The deal worth over 1.3 billion US dollars has many more military sophisticated equipment. What however interests the maritime analysts is the inclusion of a major item in the form of eight Orion long range maritime aircraft which can be used for surveillance, Anti Sub marine warfare and Anti Surface warfare. Why is this raising the heckles in the Arabian Sea? To understand this and more there would be a need to look at the aircraft itself and then analyse the pattern of Naval Operations in the Arabian Sea.
2. A look at the P3C Orion. While the airframe and the design of the aircraft is quite old (almost four decades old), what is notable is the regular updates with which the aircraft has been rendered equal to the present day tasks. The US Navy itself has plans to use the aircraft for the next 15 years and expects to support the fleet elsewhere for another two decades plus. A total of over 480 Aircraft have been built to date since the first built some forty years ago.

Raptor, this wasa good article.

No questions or doubts on author's knowledge but he forgot one important point or may be two.

Lethal Surface and Air cover to the Orions.

Being here for decades near an Orion base I can tell you that Orions do not fly with 24/7 CAP cover. There are enough radars that can see opponents on time. With links these days and plenty of active fighters around they can do their job just fine. You do remember the US spy plane landing in China? It did not have F15's... Not standard.

What was the story about that spy plane in china, could you also clear out F-15's.....impact?

It was an informative article though..... good on yaa :cool2:

The spy plane operation was just a ruse to start hostilities with China after BUSH was sworn in. Its another thing some wise people close to him not to blow it out of proportion...instead the neocons started planning 911.

Yeah, I heard. Barak seems to be quite effective.

What kind of destroyers and frigates are being equipped with the Barak SAM system?

.
All the Delhi Class, Viraat, Rajputs, and some other escorts. Only large vessels that aren't fitted are the Talwars but they have Khastan.

And being in IAF for nearly 4 years I can tell you that MiG-29K's and Flankers can shoot down any Orion by staying behind your radar range.

Secondly how you gonna protect the orions in the hostile OPS?

Carry on type your dream list of Mirage-III/V JF-Satrah and F-Solah.

God knows what were your radar operators and the super duper AF was doing when Atlantique was shot down.

Yeah, I heard. Barak seems to be quite effective.

In a recent (just a day back) naval excersice which was organized for Indian PM, Frigate INS Ganga played the "enemy" and launched a deadly sea skimming surface-to-surface missile, which started surging towards the carrier INS Vikrant on which PM and his wife was boarded.

But INS Ganga's sister ship, INS Gomati, sailing few miles away, responded with two Barak missiles. The Barak is a ship-borne anti-missile weapon with a range of 10 to 12 km and is launched vertically.

One of the Barak missiles looped down to take the hostile missile head-on, and it seemed as if one star was killing another. As there was no hostile target left, the other Barak dropped into the sea.

Also India and Israel are now jointly developing Barak-II.

there is no way that orion will have any impact on india.indian navy is on her way to become a true blue water navy which cannot be challenged just by buying some augosta's and orions.india has already signed a deal for more advanced scorpeans and negotiating for nuclear subs from russia.besides india is negotiating for P-8A maritime patrol aircrafts which r way too advanced than P-3s.by 2012 with scorpeans,akulas,2 careers,P8A patrol aircrafts indian navy will rule indian ocean. Also do not forget that indian navy is planning to buy some more fighters to operate from ground, and they can very well be rafeals or SH.

[Mod Edit: Please back up such claims in the future so that others get to know its not just your wishful thinking. Thnx]
