Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the distribution and plantation of 10 million saplings across the country marking the “Mujib Borsho” (Mujib Year) and reiterated her government’s goal of increasing the country’s forest coverage to 25 per cent, BSS reports.

“When we formed the government in 1996, the country’s forest coverage was only 7.0 per cent and then we raised it to 17 per cent. Now, our target is to enhance the (forest) coverage to 25 per cent and we’re working relentlessly to achieve the goal,” she said after launching the programme at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka on Thursday morning.

Sheikh Hasina also inaugurated the National Tree Plantation Campaign 2020 through the same event.

The premier reaffirmed her call to the people to plant more trees to protect the environment, saying that saving the natural environment is a must.

“I would like to urge all to plant trees at places whatever you have and whatever you can. Those, who live in towns, can plant trees on rooftops or tubs of the balcony of their house,” she said.

She continued: “If you plant trees, you feel good and your mind will remain always fresh. Besides, it will bring your solvency … you feel well if you eat a green chilli of the tree planted by yourself. So, let’s come to plant trees together.”

“Bangladesh is a deltaic country and let’s protect and develop it by planting trees in a massive way,” she added.

The prime minister also said that the plantation of trees is very much essential to ensure food and nutrition of the people alongside their economic prosperity.

“Keeping this in mind, our party Bangladesh Awami League has been planting trees since 1984 and we start the tree plantation campaign every year on the first day of Bengali month of Ashar,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh Krishak League first took this initiative and now all associate bodies of Awami League are planting trees together.

The prime minister recalled that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman first initiated the tree plantation campaign after independence.

“Today, we take the programme in his memory,” she said, adding this programme has been taken to create aforestation and green belt across the country.

Sheikh Hasina said from the beginning she is urging the people to plant at least three trees – one fruit-bearing, one wood-producing and one medicinal.

“Today, I launched the distribution and plantation of 10 million saplings by planting three trees — ‘chalta’, ‘tetul’ and ‘chhatiyan’ – on the Ganabhaban premises,” she said.

Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin, Prime Minister’s Office Secretray Md Tofazzel Hossain Mian, Environment Secretary Ziaul Hasan and PM’s Press Secretray Ihsanul Karim were present on the occasion, among others.

Earlier at a virtual meeting on July 12, Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin said the prime minister will inaugurate the distribution and plantation of 10 million saplings across the country by planting saplings on Ganabhaban premises on July 16.

The minister also said after the inauguration of the programme by the prime minister, three saplings — one fruit-bearing, one wood-producing, and one medicinal — will be officially planted in every district and upazila.

Later, 20,325 saplings will be planted in each of 492 upazilas of the country at a convenient time in the current tree plantation season from July 16 to Sept 15 by maintaining the health codes in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Shahab Uddin said.

“Following the footsteps of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who first started tree plantation drive in the country, this programme is being implemented in the ‘Mujib Year’ to maintain the balance of environment,” the minister added.

Superb Hasina ji. Carry on. My best wishes.

Lmao, what the **** on earth is this

Ha ha ha 'Hazrat Hasina'....Astaghfirullah!

But jokes aside, I'm all for planting new saplings. We should plant ten for any tree cut down, which corrupt officials are doing at every opportunity.

. . .
I don't think there is any. Fake news probably. lol

Reading the OP there, seems it was done by some singapore based group. I would assume they put singapore PM as best then.... (he is very good it must be said though).

Problem is how will they plant trees and where... rising population means more land for agriculture and residence... industries will not cut slack either... 25 pc seems pretty steep ask for a developing nation with already low land mass

Build at least a few hundred children's parks and playgrounds in big cities like Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Rangpur and Sylhet. People and particularly children and their mothers are suffocating in all these cities.

However, being the most stupid PM of a country, Hasina does not understand the needs of people and cities. She keeps on blabbering on unnecessary things.

There are too much of land under trees without her stupid patronage. If she wants to re-forest I ask her to go and visit the Cox's Bazar to Teknaf route by road to see many hill tops are bald without trees. So, I ask her to plant trees there instead of talking this 26% forestation.

Hilltops cannot support trees let alone forests due to soil and other issues.

No, not exactly. Our hills are not so high, the soil is good and are already supporting trees. But, when trees are stolen or fall down because of storms they are not replaced with new plants. So, the hills become bald in the Cox's Bazar to Teknaf belt.

These are not replenished because most of the hills are Khash belonging to the govt. As usual, the authorities there more care about stealing and less care about re-planting. I have seen many small hills just near the Cox's Bazar town owned by rich private people. All are bestowed with trees.

Instead of hollow talking, the Hasina govt should create children's parks here and there and playgrounds in Dhaka and other cities. Our rural areas are already saturated with trees. Many people with a little higher income plant trees as a commercial product. They do not need Hasina's vague patronizing.
