During my youth, Pakistan & Iran were the best of friends. Iran provided active help to Pakistan by buying Sabres on Pakistan’s’ behalf after the 1965 US sanctions. Therefore deterioration in Pakistan –Iran relations is seriously worrying. Besides, Pakistan cannot afford to be surrounded by 3 hostile neighbors.
In order to be brief; I have decided to limit this post to the period from 2000 onwards only.
Not sure that many honorable members are aware that Iran has been complaining as well as accusing Pakistan of harboring terrorist groups that attack inside Iran for nearly a decade?
First time I came across Pakistan being named was in 2007. Jundullah (a Sunni terrorist group claiming to fight for the rights of Sunni Muslims in Sistan-Baluchistan region) killed 18 Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Same group later carried out bombings in Zahidan in 2009 (20 killed), 2010 (27 killed), 2009 Pishin (43 killed) & Chahbahar in 1020 (39 killed).
Jundullah; an offshoot of the Baluch Separatist movement funded by Saddam Hussein during Iran-Iraq war; was founded by Abdul Malek Rigi who was finally apprehended and executed in Iran in 2010. It is believed that Jundullah caused the death of more than 300 civilians and 400 Iranian soldiers before Rigi could be captured.
Jaishe Adl is another Salafi/Baluch organization, founded by the remnants of Jundullah in 2012 and is allegedly based in Pakistani Baluchistan. Jaishe-Adl has been carrying on with terrorist attacks inside Iran since 2013. Last major attack was on Feb 13, 2019, on a bus on the Khash-Zahidan road, killing 27 Revolutionary Guards.
Iran has accused the USA of funding anti-Iran terrorist activities. Also time & again complained to Pakistan on turning a blind eye to these activities. It is alleged that these groups are also involved in the smuggling of Iranian Diesel into Pakistan, profits being used to finance the terrorist operations.
In Feb 2019 General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the IRGC Quds Force warned the Pakistanis on Thursday to be aware of attempts by Saudi Arabia to ruin their country through its “money”.

No doubt every Pakistani must feel anger at Iran after the Ormara attack. Pray, try to be empathetic; won’t Iranians feel the same way about the death of their soldiers? In my opinion, the Kulbhushan Yadev affair & the recent Ormara incident indicates that Iranian Revolutionary Guards may be trying to punish Pakistan in a “Tit for tat” manner.
Pakistan had thus far denied the existence of the anti-Iranian sectarian/terrorist groups inside Pakistan claiming that the actions were carried out by organizations based inside Iran. However, I heard Imran Khan admitting that Pakistani territory is being used against Iran during the last night's joint press conference.
Permit me to clarify that this post is neither meant to be an apology nor a justification of the heinous act which martyred 14 innocent Pakistan services personnel. My sympathies are with their families and I wholehearted condemn this attack on the sovereignty of my country.
The objective of this post is simply to point out that emotionally charged knee-jerk reaction and rhetoric against Modi (there is thread ‘It is time to punish Modi’) or start counting the ‘Crimes’ of Iran against Pakistan are pointless gestures. The correct way is to analyze the historical background of the incident and then try to come up with remedial measures.
Imran Khans' sudden trip to Iran is meant to clear the air and improve relations with our western neighbor. IMHO, should Pakistan make concrete & visible efforts to curb anti-Iran activities from Pakistani territory, Iran would reciprocate. Then we would only need to worry about Afghan & Indian involvement in the terrorist activities inside Pakistan.
