PM Imran 'optimistic' govt may not need IMF bailout

Following increasing criticism from opposition parties, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday expressed the hope that the government might not have to turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout with the looming economic disaster, Express News reported.

He remarked while speaking with representatives of journalist bodies including the All Pakistan News Papers Association (APNS), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) and Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE).

Last week, Islamabad had formally applied for IMF assistance to deal with the impending balance of payments crisis. Though, it isn’t clear as yet how much financial help Pakistan could be requiring, PM Imran said that the country could need around $12 billion to deal with the problem.

A team of IMF officials is scheduled to visit Islamabad on November 7 for talks on the size of the loan facility that the government in Islamabad would be requiring.

The premier said the country’s economy is in dire straits and its every sector, the government has analysed, was found in the doldrums.

PM Imran, however, said the government had already approached its close allies seeking their financial assistance with a positive response being given by them.

While blaming the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) rules, the prime minister said the previous governments have drowned us in debt. “The loans taken had not even been utilised properly.”

PM Imran, who is also chairman of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said he is hopeful that the PTI government would not need financial assistance from international borrowers.

He went on to say that after taking tough decisions in the first six months of his government’s tenure, the masses would be given relief which would usher in a new era in the country’s history.

In the meeting with media representatives, the prime minister also announced the withdrawal of 5% duty on news print.

He also lauded the role played by the media saying: “I would not be in the position I am in today, if media wouldn’t have played its due role.”

This is stupidity. PTI has no clear policy towards anything. Why keeping such important matters in limbo ??

Economy is no joke.

The nation needs results, not hopes or platitudes. Results Mr. Khan, if you please. Take all the time you wish, but please deliver something tangible.

A good move!!! Sow utter confusion and delusion in the minds of the enemies....

One of greatest human sentiment is optimism. IK always remains optimist even in depths of despair. This is what drives great men forward when others throw up their hands ...

Economy is no joke.

The past PPP/PMLN govts treated it as a joke. The current government is looking at all options, IMF being the last resort.

The solution is very simple: Apply the anti-terrorism laws in mega corruption cases.

Economy is not something to play with. Make a decision, and stick to it. And if you face criticism then own it. PTI should not have politicized IMF while sitting in the opposition benches. Height of immaturity.

In 8 weeks? The previous lot played game of musical chairs for 30 years. Give IK at least his 5 years.

He has asked for 6 months: "He went on to say that after taking tough decisions in the first six months of his government’s tenure, the masses would be given relief which would usher in a new era in the country’s history."

They are evaluating all the options and will go for the best one. Economy is not a game that you "just stick to it". They will do whats best for the country unlike in the past where they did what was best for themselves.

PTI should present a roadmap of how it wants to fix the economy. If it can make do without IMF bailout, no issue. However, we continue to hear conflicting accounts about how PTI wants to proceed in this regard, while Pak currency continue to devalue.

Roadmap please. No time for mental games.

And have eight weeks warped into 24 weeks or does the US calender tick faster?

.

Is it because it needs $20 billion, and the INF package is $12 billion?

Nope. Your vision is clouded by your fawning. I can see clearly, which is why I said above (that you ignored): Take all the time you wish, but please deliver something tangible.
