ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday constituted a committee to execute the government's affordable housing scheme.

Under the housing scheme, the government will construct five million low-cost houses.

Chairing a meeting earlier today, Prime Minister Imran directed the committee to submit its initial recommendations within a week. The prime minister emphasised that the private sector should be encouraged and maximum facilitation must be extended to those who would be partnering with the government for the project.

The prime minister noted that the construction of low-cost houses is the foremost priority of the government as it would not only address housing issues in major cities but also promote economic growth and create job opportunities.

"We have to devise a comprehensive mechanism for regulating slums without dislocating poor people and ensuring provision of all civic amenities to those residing in these areas," said Prime Minister Imran.

The committee will be headed by Secretary Housing and Works Dr Imran Zeb Khan to devise a comprehensive and coherent plan of action, in consultation with relevant experts and representatives of concerned departments.

The meeting was attended by Yaqoob Izahar, Najeeb Haroon, Arshad Dad, Secretary Housing and Works Dr Imran Zeb Khan, Secretary Law Justice (R) Abdul Shakoor Paracha, and other senior officers.

This have potential of both being the drives that takes PTI politics up a further notch or become one of the biggest corruption scandals and destroy them. PM Imran Khan needs to choose his team for this carefully and make sure that the concerned institutions are strengthened so that they can keep an eye on the proceedings.

Priority should be given to economy. reducing trade deficit & improve Govt. institution & make Govt. run companies profitable, crackdown or corruption, kick out extra manpower, corrupt & incompetent.

This will further increase expense although we don't have money for our existing expense.

Actually, projects like these though expensive have multiple benefits so that makes them attractive. I wont mind if we plan and work out some details in this 10-12 months and may be start with work on ground in an years time (provided our economic situation is a bit better or at least showing signs of improvement). However, my main point was that these projects have potential to make you or break you. IK needs to be extra careful when he chooses team for this and make sure that someone is watching all the time to ensure there is no scandal coming out of this

I am not against it i am against its timing and Govt. priority.

it should start after 10~12 Years unless we get all the money from abroad.

These cheap home is of no value if you don't have money to buy it. If you don't have money to maintain it & most importantly to run it.

Most important thing i missed in List is DAM Water + Cheap Electricity.

To Give you few examples
Most of Our Economy is Textile Based
Most of Unit are closed or Working On/Off
Each Normal Textile Building House app. 300 Worker
When One unit(building) is closed 300 Family suffer.

One Industry showed growth locally but can't compete internationally because Their cost of production is too high(Power+multiple Gen(uninterepted power supply)) Although Halal Market is huge but they can only export processed chicken because primary is too expensive. Huge Potential for Export.

One can live without power or home but not without water.

There should not be any slums to begin with.

If provided ample job opportunities. People will move to other places happily.

I hope that this is just a case of lost in Translation rather than what it projects right now

Private sector would invest generating lots of economic activity involving many industries and generating jobs.

This is not about regularizing slums in its current shape. There are reports and grievances of people mostly living in Kachi Abadi (Slums) that wants to be regularized. providing jobs is already on cards but I don't see that anyone can earn so quickly to shift from slums to advance/developed areas. For the time being, you cannot get rid of slums like this and need a lot of time, energy & investment which can be done.

All of this started when previous governments brought people to work instead of bringing work to the people.

The trend can however be reversed if a concentrated effort is put.

I suggest a two pronged approach. First by using the CPEC development projects and building model Low cost residences along the Belt and returning the people their Art of Agriculture as many people are farmers who have moved to the cities looking for better paying jobs leaving their farming roots. An ancestral occupation.

This is how ancient Egypt tackled the issue some 5000 years ago as well.

I agree Ali, the focus SHOULD be economy.

As for textile, the news of units being closed is exaggerated really. I am in textile business and i know a lot of units making crazy money too. The few units that did closed down (few as opposed to many that is usually mentioned in news) were mainly due to their own follies and wrong policies or cheating!!

Why? Is it low income(subsidies) for common man or high profit margin project for builder?
that job is temporary and will not solve the core issue unemployment even if you get loan for this project.
