Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has granted approval to the establishment of a cantonment in Waziristan following a proposal to this effect, during a meeting with army chief General Raheel Sharif, reliable officials told Daily Times on Wednesday.

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif called on the prime minister at the PM House on Wednesday and briefed him on the operation Zarb-e-Azb. The army chief said the operation is being carried out successfully according to the plan, and the armed forces will achieve the objectives of the operation as per the direction of the prime minister. Gen Sahrif said that the ground operation in Miranshah has been ongoing and evacuation of IDPs of North Waziristan Agency had completed.

He said more then 800,000 IDPs have moved to the settled areas. The army chief also gave a briefing on the situation at the Pak-Afghan border where Afghan militants are allegedly attacking army troops. The COAS apprised Prime Minister Nawaz on the IDPs situation. The prime minister showed satisfaction that all the institutions are performing in a well-coordinated manner to support the IDPs and said that the government is devising a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for them so that they can be rehabilitated with honour and dignity, after the operation is over. Prime Minister Nawaz and COAS agreed that the sacrifices of IDPs are for the stability and security of Pakistan.

This is a very important step. All cantonment areas in Pakistan quite well developed infrastructure wise and have a higher education level. The Army should also construct a cadet college and gift it to the people of North Waziristan.

Operation is going all planned. No resistance as such since the whole drama played out earlier gave the terrorists all the warning they needed to scoot. The only way forward now is to start hitting Afg with surgical strikes.

@Oscar l Depends on what you think the objectives were.

If those objectives themselves were essentially a temporary respite, then its going to take a long long time. The Turks have experienced this with the Kurd areas. Perhaps the same process must be repeated here.

Good idea, although it should have been done ages ago.

Perhaps what is needed is a hub and spoke system. With a main cantonment .. and various outposts like these offered to us by turkish firms spread throughout.

battallion HQ's are planned at Bajaur, Dir, Buner. Brigade HQ is planned at Miranshah. Div HQ is planned at Swat and subordinate to the Corps HQ at Peshawar. these infrastructures will have a +ve downstream effect on the locals - schools, hospitals (CMH), roads, electricity, not to mention jobs and new markets to buy foods etc.

for the army it will give them a quick reation to any potential threat from the militants or across the border. additional FC border posts are also planned. this plan was chalked out by Kiyani and i'm glad its being implemented.

Cantonment in NWA is a good idea, however, FATA being merged into KPK, I don't see that happening anytime soon..........

@Hyperion @ghilzai @Spring Onion

Cantoments come with infrastructure, cadet college, air port, road links, possibly FATA being merged into KPK or a new province....does it mark a good start for us?
