Key Points

  • Chinese shipyards have launched another frigate and corvette
  • Apparent variable depth sonars and towed arrays will add to the PLAN's growing anti-submarine warfare capabilities
Chinese shipyards launched two more ships for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in late March.

The first was a Type 056

'Jiangdao'-class corvette, which was launched at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai. This is the 25th ship of the class, the first of which was launched in 2012, and the 8th to be built by Hudong-Zhonghua.

Photographs show that this is another of the class to be equipped with towed array and variable depth sonars for an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role, making a total of seven Type 056 corvettes with this configuration so far.

The second launch was of a Type 054A 'Jiangkai II'-class frigate, which was launched at the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou. This is the 22nd ship of the class and the 11th to be built at Huangpu.

It is not possible to establish whether this is configured primarily for ASW from the photographs available to date, although the last two Type 054As built at Huangpu were both fitted with towed array and variable depth sonars.
