PLA Navy in live-fire attack drills in East China and South China seas

Live fire by missile-carrying aircraft in East China and South China seas bare the sabre to neighbours and mark a shift in strategy

Friday, 18 January, 2013, 12:00am

The People's Liberation Army's naval air force has carried out attack drills in both the East and South China seas in a show of force directed at countries involved in territorial disputes with China, according to naval experts.

Photos posted on the website of the PLA Navy on Wednesday showed several J-10 fighter jets that had been sent by the East China Sea Fleet to the waters of the East China Sea close to the disputed Diaoyu Islands, known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan, which are claimed by both Beijing and Tokyo.

The website said the drill took place "recently", without saying when. The photo captions said that air-to-air missiles were carried thousands of kilometres by the military aircraft and then launched in a live-fire drill, to more accurately simulate a real combat scenario. The drill marked the first time that the naval air force fired air-to-air missiles far out at sea.

Another drill was conducted by the South China Sea Fleet on January 8 and featured day and night air raids by Hong-6 bombers, which had to evade enemy radar and electromagnetic interference en route to an attack on a harbour more than 1,000 kilometres away from the naval base in Zhanjiang , Guangdong, according to the navy's website. Pilots who took part in that drill had to fly more than eight hours from Zhanjiang for the staged attack, which took place in an open sea area.

The naval drills came amid escalating tensions between China and Japan over the territorial row that has seen ties between the nations deteriorate since the Japanese government purchased the disputed chain from a private owner in September.

Last week, Beijing confirmed that it had scrambled two J-10 fighter jets to monitor Japanese aircraft near the Diaoyus, while Tokyo said it was considering stationing F-15 fighter jets on Shimoji-jima Island in Okinawa prefecture to deal with Chinese aircraft.

Ni Lexiong , director of the sea power and defence policy research institute at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, said the drills indicated that the PLA Navy had changed its strategy from inshore defence to open-sea counterattacks far offshore.

"The drills in the East and South China seas were obviously also intended to warn Japan and [other Southeast Asian] countries that the army is well prepared for any possible battles if our sovereignty is threatened," Ni said.

The Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie said the PLA naval fleet's improved combat abilities should also aid in China's increasing role in international anti-piracy and escort missions

"We have never hidden our desire to sail into deep waters, and this also enhances our navy's combat abilities in dealing with a crisis or attack," Li said.

Li said that more naval drills on the high seas, as well as other military exercises held in tough situations, would be carried out by the PLA in the future.

Yes, when we attack the enemy, we'll attack with white phosphorus bombs and burn them into dust instantly.

If Japan and Viet Nam army allies then Japan will take care PLA navy, Viet Nam will take cares PLA on ground then China will be big headache.

Viet Nam is very very strong on ground which was PLA still lack of experience and too chicken for fight. Japan is very very strong on Navy and PLA is too lames for that battle.

Remember, Viet Nam and Japan still had one last card to play !!!

Plus, Viet Nam, Japan still had Myanmar for a big bonus to China !!!

How is Vietnam capable of taking care of PLA on the ground? Is Vietnam going to invade China or is China going to invade Vietnam, if its the latter, then what would China gain from that, I thought China just want the islands. And Japan isn't able to do anything without Uncle Sams say so. Neither China and Japan will ever go into conflict because China is pretty passive and Japan is America's client state.

China HAS experience on the ground, a hundred years of modern warfare in fact: Warlord era, Resistance against Japan during WW 2, KMT-CCP civil war, Korean war, and of course Vietnam war. Basically China has more fighting experience than Vietnam and also there is a difference between being smart not to fight and too chicken to fight.

And what one last card? Did this fictional alliance ran out of other cards to play and are now down to one last card? If so then it doesn't look good for Japan and it's legion of weaboo followers.

Unless it is a long-term occupation, otherwise your strength is not worth mentioning.

No, with SS-N-27 Sizzler! our new subs need some test targets. The Russians love to see how we sink your ships.

You overestimating Vietnamese submarine force, if we have a loss of several ships boats, then Vietnam will be the loss of the entire Navy and Air Force.

Whenever China pushed Janpan nor Viet Nam out of the limit, then it's will become to be allies for a greater good security of both nation. Based on the wars history of Viet Nam, battle on the ground it never loose but will not garantee for Navy.

Japan's has more experience on Navy battles than any Asia contries, and Japan Navy still one of the strongest and modernized in the World nor even comparison with PLA nowaday.

The benefit of both nations to become together and will shared the greater big threat as known as PLA, its will make PLA think triple before PLA can moves an inch.

Ameria did not get big treat or direct from PLA, plus its still has bigest fiancial problems to deal with and then it will not be feel strong to make any real help either Japan or Viet Nam.

Only Japan and Viet Nam has direct treats from China from sea to land, and there will be more reasons for both nation will be together and fight for last. No one else !!!

Viet Nam's has proved for itselft when its needed 27 days to wiped out Polpot regim from Southern Viet Nam and station in Cambodia for almost 10 years, same on that condition on the Nothern Viet Nam PLA needed 29 days with a big massive troops but still can not even get close to Ha Noi.

At that time, that moment PLA only face of with local militia, not even real fight with Viet Nam Elite Troops.

So in 1979 Viet Nam troops has fought 2 battles at the same time. Am I right ?

China, when was the last time you fought a real war? Vietnam. A long time ago. And Vietnam did a pretty good job with much inferior forces.

You also got your butt kicked in Korea.

The only ``war`` you won is the war against India.
