Pir Mazhar says won't allow varsity in Hyderabad
JAMSHORO: In what was seen a bizarre statement, Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq said he will not allow anybody to set up any public sector university in Hyderabad, drawing strong reaction from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
Addressing students during a ceremony at Sindh University in Jamshoro, he claimed that certain elements wanted to vilify and destroy Sindh University and some 'senior individuals' hatched conspiracies against the institution in the past.
He said the elements wanted to set up a university in specific areas of Hyderabad but he became an 'iron wall' against their determinations.
The MQM has announced that it would hold protest demonstrations across Sindh against the statement issued by the education minister.
Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq has retracted from his statement against construction of public sector university in Hyderabad, our sources reported.
In a clarification, the minister backed away from his remarks and said he had not said anything against construction of varsity.
Meanwhile, the trade centres and business houses in the second largest city of the province of Sindh observing shutter down strike in protest against the hate-statement of the provincial education minister vowing not to allow setting up of a Hyderabad University in the city here, our sources reported.
MQM sharply reacting to this vindictive statement termed it anti-Sindh and injustice to the citizens of Hyderabad and gave a call for peaceful protests.
Responding to the call of MQM, Hyderabad Anjuman Tajiran had announced observing strike and the shops and trade centres this morning were seen closed all across the city, while the citizens torched tyres in different parts of the city protesting the prejudiced remarks and displayed condemnation banners.
