Pipavav wins Rs 2500 cr order from Indian Navy to manufacture gun boats

MUMBAI: Pipavav Shipyard has won a Rs 2500 crore order from the Indian navy to manufacture gun boats . The order was cleared by the Cabinet committee of security.

Nikhil Gandhi, the CMD of Pipavav Shipyard confirmed the news to ET NOW. ' I havn't received any formal communication yet, but yes we have won the order as we were the lowest bidder' Gandhi told ET NOW.

Given the current situation in the neighbourhood and a dismal level of public sector ship building capabilitites, GOI finally decided to throw ship building to private companies to make induction at a faster pace before the service levels crash down.
And unofficial reports say that L&T will be the lead builder of second line of subs with Mazagoan as public entity partner.First boat will be launched in 2015 with AIP and SLBM/AShM vertical launch cells.And the delivery of 6 boats to be finished by 2020 Dec. Each boat will be weighing in between 3500-4000 tonns.
I would say a solid and perfect DE sub.

Not possible in India..Considering the involvement of MDL.. I will be very happy if all the Scorpenes are inducted by then...

MDL wont be building them. L&T is the prime contractor. MDL will share knowledge and will be principal partner from the Gov side. Since its the first time that a private co is building them, Gov dont want to loosen all strings. A cautious approach I would say.
IN and DRDO were designing a boat under DE configeration a while ago when Scorpene backfired. Now with Arihant experience they put that into DE and might get a foreign consultant . DRDO will be demonstrating its own AIP early next year.

DRDO is still going to design the indigenous SSks ..12 of them are supposed to be inducted with P-75 & P-75I..
DRDO's own AIP will be used while other techs. will be derived from the two lines of foreign subs..

Mate I do not think DRDO working on any SSK design but AIP. These will be installed in foreign designed submarines. DRDO is working on nuclear submarines only.

Indigenous SSks are surely on cards.. Thats why we are seeing the multi bill. dollar RFPs going out... A very heavy ToT will be there in these deals and this Knowledge will be used in designing own SSKs.
12 of these will be inducted ..Total 24 DE subs..

this should have been done at least 5 years back....indian govt needs to realize that the govt owned arms factories and shipyards are not capable to meet the private players.....they also dont have any hunger or desire to create any break through technology or contribute in any way towards country.....

government service chalta hai, din nikal rahe hai attitude is costing us a lot...... once private players come into action and slowly but surely money starts flowing to them....

govt organizations will realize if they aint competitive then their shops will close...

The gunboats being built, I hope are comparable to the Chinese Type 022...this boat is very good for coastal defence and surveilllance. It has great speed as well. I hope we get these modern tech boats rather than our old outdated designs.
