The SSx is a prototype battle rifle, developed by Pindad. This weapon was aimed to meet a possible Indonesian requirement, as well as for possible export customers. This battle rifle was first publicly revealed in 2014.

The Pindad SSx is a gas-operated weapon. It is likely that its design was influenced by BelgianFN SCAR or German Heckler & Koch HK417 battle rifles. The SSx is chambered for a standard NATO 7.62x51 mm ammunition. Currently there is a trend to adopt automatic rifles chambered for the more powerful 7.62x51 mm round rather than traditional 5.56x45 mm round due to longer range and penetration. Though these 7.62 mm weapons are typically heavier, have smaller magazine capacity, lower rate of fire. These rifles are more suitable for long-range engagements rather than for close quarter battles.

A fire mode selector is conveniently located over the pistol grip and is operated by a thumb. Cocking handle is located on the left side of the receiver. Ejection port for spent cases is located on the right side of the receiver. Ejection port is fitted with a deflector, which propels spent cases away from the shooter.

The Pindad SSx is fed from 20-round capacity magazines.

This weapon has got a side-folding stock.

The Pindad SSx has a full-length Picatinny-type scope rail. It comes as standard with simple detachable flip-up sights. Though this weapon is normally intended to be used with various optical scopes or night vision sights. This battle rifle has a claimed effective range of 800 m.

There are additional Picatinny-type accessory rails on the foregrip. This weapon can mount various accessories, such as bipod, vertical grip, laser pointers, tactical flashlights and so on. The Pindad SSx can also mount a sound suppressor.



Variants



Designated marksman version of the SSx with a longer barrel. It has a claimed effective range of 950 m. This weapon is much heavier and weights 5.6 kg.
