* Prepares to start Lahore-Mashad flights soon
KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) gets ready for European Union certification and acquisition of ATR Simulator.
It has prepared to start flights to Mashad (Iran) from Lahore and has revised the policy for award of GSAs through Board of Directors (BOD).
These decisions were taken at PIA’s 354th Board of Directors meeting held here at PIA Head Quarters, a PIA statement said here on Sunday.
Presided by Secretary Aviation and Chairman PIA Syed Muhamamd Ali Gardezi, the meeting also attended by Aslam Khaliq, Azam Saigol, Ghiasuddin Ahmed, Atif Bajwa, Nazir Malik, Waqar Yusuf, the Managing Director PIA.
The meeting decided that PIA will acquire revalidation of European Union Safety Agency (EUSA) certification by the end of March 2014 before the new aircraft on dry lease are inducted in PIA fleet.
This is an essential requirement for the airline to keep its operation in the Western world and also imperative to obtain EASA-145. Otherwise, the new aircrafts will have to be sent abroad for inspection and maintenance checks which certainly become very expensive putting an extrad financial burden. However, CAA will conduct its inspections prior to that.
The board approved acquisition of Simulator for the ATR aircraft which will not only save huge expenses being incurred on its pilots while getting training from abroad but will pave way for revenue generation through trainings to other airlines’ staff ; foreign as well as local.
For having more transparency in its sales, it has been decided that in future the award of GSAs will be approved through BOD approval.
As per Prime Minister’s directives , the PIA board also reviewed airlines’ preparation for launching of flights to Mashad (Iran) and gave its consent. PIA’s twice a week operation/flights to Mashad will be from Lahore via Quetta from February 25, 2014.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Aviation, Shujaat Azeem gave a detailed briefing to the Board on the revival plan for PIA.
Shujaat Azeem also inspected the maintenance facility of other airlines at Karachi Airport.

For some reason our flights to Iran have always been very limited. Lahore to Mashhad is definitely a good decision. Two historic cities will have a chance to boost tourism.

Why not flights to Tehran allowed?
There is not much to see in Mashad!

Who said they are not allowed? Not much traffic I guess. Shaheen Air has been flying to Mashad since 5 years now. Najaf is next on card.
