Despite the need to acquire new military aircraft to effectively pursue its war against communist rebels and other internal security threats, Philippine Air Force commanding general Lt. Gen. Jose Reyes Jr. yesterday said the cash-strapped Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has no choice but to make do with the PAF's existing resources, including jet fighters, until 2011 in combating the insurgents.

He admitted the country will have to make do without any air defense until 2011 when internal threats are hopefully addressed.

“As of now, our thrust is to clear our internal security problems. Once we're finished, that's the time we move on to the acquisition of these high-value items,” Reyes told reporters in a chance interview in Camp Aguinaldo.

“Fighter planes are very expensive. If you buy them, all of the resources of the military will be used up and we cannot....

The Phillipines forces are not designed for the high intensity warfare. Their primary objectives are to act as a counter force against various rebel groups. Counter insurgency (COIN) is actually their main mission.

I don't see how fighting airctaft will help against an enemy that fight entirely on land, has no aviation capability or anti-aircraft weapons.

But one thing to note is that the Phillipines Navy is very very weak considering the fact that they operate ships from world war two US surplus.

this would give their airforce the air supremecy thus allowing them to call in airstrike etc..

this would considerably enhance their abilitys. one can look at the way Planes changed the ww1 battlefield within a few years. the difrence between the start of war and the end of war was HUGE!

Kaiser please read the article before you POST! :ranting: its of a Phillippine air force not Pakistani air force. You thought the title says PAF so it must be Pakistani PAF. Thread open for discussion.

For that purpose they require low flying COIN aircraft and helicopters. Purchasing F-16's to knock out a fly is an over kill and unaffordable since the Phillipines military is in no way capable of purchasing any newer fighters for years to come.

COIN aircraft are are affordable answer.

The Philippine Air Force
has a budget from the Armed Forces of the Philippines
(AFP) of about $1 billion U.S. which is more than enough
to purchase modern fighter jets.
