Dammam- Asharq Al-Awsat

The third phase of the Joint Al-Jazeera Shield Drill 10, considered the largest military drill in the Gulf region, is set to launch on Saturday, February 2nd, in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and will include field training with live ammunition.

Concluding its second phase earlier last week, the wargames saw notable multi-faceted participation of Gulf militaries. Each of the Saudi naval, and air-land forces next to security, and national and border guard units partook in the drill.

It is worth noting that the exercise aims at maintaining the security and stability of the region and comes within the overall strategy of the Saudi Ministry of Defense.

The wargame showcases Saudi military planning, operational conduct, latest armed techniques, and seeks to bolster joint cooperation and integrated military coordination among the participating Gulf countries.

Brigadier General Abdullah Al-Subaie, the official spokesman for the exercise, said that the exercise saw the participation of distinguished and elite army commanders, officers, and specialized forces.

“In the exercise, the latest combat simulator systems were employed to test military operations. These systems and simulators are being operated by distinctive elites from Saudi armed forces. They train ground commanders to comprehensively manage military operations and ensure the preparedness of command, control, and communications centers on operational and tactical levels,” Brig. Gen. Subaie said.

He also stressed that the drill’s second phase had succeeded in achieving the desired objectives, pointing out that the third phase will include field exercises with live ammunition.

Brigadier General Abdul Aziz Al-Ashool, Director of Operations of the Joint Task Force, revealed that the wargames consist of four phases.

The first phase, the academic training stage, was completed. The second phase, which focused on the simulated training for command centers, was also fully implemented.

Brig.Gen. Al-Ashool added that the exercise is not limited to Saudi or Gulf armed forces, but extends to the integration and cooperation with all regional government agencies in the region. The exercise is classified as one of the largest military drills in the region, in terms of the number of troops involved, weaponized technology, and military operational planning.
